Topic: Is this ecsema??!! Posted: 28 October 2007 at 4:31pm |
OK, this is what we discovered yesterday...
I'm thinking its ecsema BUT she did have her jabs on Wednesday, so I haven't totally ruled out the idea that maybe it was a reaction...??
However, she also had two very red, dry patches on either side of her face. Since discovering these, I have been using the Lemnis fatty cream on her morning and night which has helped the dry patches, but the spotty bits sort of come and go...Or do you think she just has allergies (I'm allergic to dust mites, pollen, grass, etc.) and because its spring there might be allergens floating in the air...?
Let me know if you've had any of your bubs with this sort of reaction and if so, what do I do??

Its not a heat reaction is it? My skin can do that with heat ( a bizzare thing that I am getting post pregnancy )

I did think of that too, especially with it coming and going, but it doesn't explain away all the dryness over her body...

It does look like Sam's excema, but could be due to laundry detergent, heat rash or even something you have eaten (if you are b/feeding).
Is her skin really dry as well? If it is excema her skin will be quite dry as they go hand in hand.
Perhaps take her to the doctor tomorrow and get it checked out just to be sure. It looks itchy and sore. Poor wee girl

It looks like excema to me. If you show it to your doc you'll be able to get some good cream to put on it. Excema can be triggered from a number of things: heat (sweat then over-drying), food (particularly dairy) and washing products/different materials against the skin; and it looks quite similar to a viral rash also but I think it is excema. Briona and I both get a heat type of excema but I have siblings who get dairy triggered excema. It should get better with age (although some people never entirely grow out of it). You'll probably find this summer the worst and then less from there. Briona and Kryssi often come out like that, particularly as little babies, when I overdressed them.

I think it looks a lot like heat rash. But I don't have a lot of experience with excema so could be that.

The big patches coming and going will be heat rash, and it does also look a bit viral, Spencer had exactly the same thing about a 6 weeks ago. If there are dry patches though that could well be ezcema. The best thing you can put on it is an emmolient (sp?) cream, like sudocream or nutraplus and only use aqueos in the bath don't use soap. Make sure you pat dry don't rub and make sure you don't over heat as that can irritate the ezcema. Spencer had a viral rash, heat rash and got ezcema at the same time and it all happened in 24 hours, it happened at the same time that we were swapping him from breastmilk to formula and it turns out that he has an allergy to cow milk protein. However like others have said it could be caused by detergent/pet hair/pollen etc. If it doesn't settle down in a couple of days I would see the doc.

Yeah, she still has the dotty rash today, but not the red patches. She is fully breastfed, but she does overheat really easily, and we have never used soap on her - only almond oil. She has always had dry skin, but it has started to get really dry on her face (her cheeks feel like sandpaper ). Will take her to the doc if it doesn't go away in the next few days...

Try aqueos cream we use it on Spencer, I cover him head to toe in it at each nappy change and use it as soap in the bath and it is really helping with his (until we get neocate on script then we shouldn't need to worry about it). Its about $9 a tub or you can get it free on script.
It is possible for something they are allergic to to pass through breastmilk, just means that they only have a small reaction to it (bit early to be illiminating things from your diet though), but something to remember if nothing else seems to be causing it.

Yesterday was the worst then and it's clearing up today. I'd put it down to overheating/excema. Grab a prescription for some kind of acquaeous cream (sp?) when you next see your doc. Another thing to do is not bath her as often. I know that sounds icky but it will help her skin to regulate it's own oils etc - soaking in water makes her skin work overtime to dry out and she'll over-dry if that makes sense. Go to every 2nd-3rd day for bathing.

I've found lemnis fatty cream does a way better job for dry skin than aqueous. Theres something about the feel of aqueous cream that I can't stand

Yeah I don't like the feel of it either, I can't wait to wash my hands after putting it on bubs. It did clear up all the horrible dry bits on my hands from washing bottles 50 times a day though. I might get some of the lemnis stuff to try.

I was given a sample at the parent & child show of a lotion called Renew by Meleluca (sp?). It is tea tree based and has done such a fantastic job of clearing up Sam's face. I also hate the aqueous cream. I stopped using it becasue I found washing her in plain water nicer than that horrible stuff. We are now trying to find more natural products to put on Sam. I have been putting apricot oil and this renew cream on Sam and she has never looked better.

Where do you get that 'Renew' stuff from, mum2sam?? Her skin hasn't cleared up really, she still has the dry patches on the side of the face and the dotty spots on her torso...

Look familiar?
This is the reaction Mercedes had to her 3rd Menz B jab. It's apparently an unusual reaction, but not unheard of. It does look an awful lot like a viral rash, and the doc probably would have put it down to that except that it was 24-hours post-imm and she wasn't sick/unhappy at all.
I talked to the allergy specialist about it and she reviewed the pics and said she was happy for Mercedes to have the 4th jab, which she had with no reaction at all.
