Topic: Weaning Formula to Cows Milk Posted: 09 July 2007 at 1:35pm |
Ethan is 1 next month and I was thinking about this the other day.
How did you go about weaning from formula to cows milk?
Ethan is still having 3-4 bottles a day, so do I give cows milk in these bottles or do I cut them out?
I have no idea and we only have 1 plunket nurse at the moment so I can't get in to see her.

I just went straight to cows milk basically. For about a week I would give one feed milk the next forumla until I finished my last tin then just did the cows milk. Some people say to give half and half in a bottle so bubs gets used to it but Ive never had to do that cos both children have taken to cows milk straight away. I kept using bottles but am thinking of changing Addison to a sipper cup because she isnt really into bottles anyway and I know with Kobe we had major trouble getting rid of his bottles so I might do it sooner rather than later this time.

See if he will take milk/water from a cup, and if he doesn't like the milk taste, put a bit of milo in it.
But I'll leave the rest of the questions to the mums on here who have gone from bottle at 12mos.

Yip he has a sipper cup and loves it. He is not too sure about it when you put milk in the cup though.
What I am wondering with giving him milk in a cup is will he be getting enough??

I have been giving Erin her 3x bottles with 50/50 water/milk and a couple of scoops of the toddler milk formula powder, and in the next day or so will increase the amount of milk, until it is all milk with just one scoop of powder. As for her sippy cup, I just fill it with water and change it a couple times a day, and she drinks from that as she pleases - in other words we still sit down together and have a bit of a cuddle for her bottles.

Yeah I must admit thats one of the reasons Im holding back ditching the bottles, I love our wee cuddles when we sit in the rocking chair and she has her bottle but at the same time Im so sick of having to wash bottles

haleigh was only having 3 cups milk at that stage so we did morning & night formula and lunchtime cows, then once she was enjoying the cows milk at lunch (we started her at 11months with karitane nurse approval) once she was 1 she was havong cows milk in morning and night and replaced the milk at lunch with water.
we added things like fruit, sprinkling of flavour to the milk till she got used to it.

what type of milk did you start with? The dark blue kind? Someone suggested to me the other day that the new Mega Milk has just as much good stuff in it as formula.
I'll be so glad to get her off formula and hope cows milk sorts her bowel probs!

Toni - we're just using the regular blue top stuff, and adding the toddler milk powder to it.

I read on the Toddler Milk tin that it was for "fussy eaters" so would be used as a top up only rather than a scheduled feed?
I think I'll give her a go on the blue top and see how she goes.

Ours just says that it's a 'delicious nutritional milk drink' or something like that (S26 Gold), to supplement whatever they are getting from their food intake etc.
