I thought that aswell.....
There would be a lot of us with a bit of "overhang" that cant afford to have it done.

But then again I gues it is just an ad....

ETA- I have had a think about this, ok, yes, I dont like the ad, I think something to help women lose weight more realisticly would be more tastefull, BUT in saying that, there are women out there who would want to go down the plastic surgery road if they were really really down about their body.
I know my mum, after having breastfed 4 babies, doesnt like he boobs cos they are very saggy and have no "fat" left in them(this is what she told me, I havent seen them lol) and she would LOVE to have boob job to put them back to where they used to be. She is extremly down about her boobs.

So I guess, if they do an ad for losing weight by exercise and stuf, then why ot have one for plastic surgery, if you can afford to do it then why not!

i've been going to the gym for 4-5mths now and am only just now starting to see the results.....in my arms! my tummy hasn't really changed and it's starting to get me down.............so yes, if i won lotto, i probably would have the surgery to get rid of the jelly belly and lift my saggy boobs

i am down about my body, always have been. but i don't find an advert for plastic surgery in-appropriate at all. it doesn't make me feel any worse about myself

We are all sensible enough to understand that OB is a business, and selling advertising space to a target audience is a great way of generating revenue, however I do think that its a little naive to think that people are not going to react to it when placed in such a prominent position - whether they be positive or negative reactions.

I personally have an issue, given that we are constantly bombarded with images of the perfect body. I guess I feel that this is just another reminder of the pressure to "conform" to a post baby body ideal....that for most of us is unrealistic without a lot of hard work.

I am also a little disapointed that OB are buying into this social stigma, rather than adopting a "love your body, love yourself - even with all its flabby bits" attitude.

<sits back and waits to be flamed>

This reminds me of a plastic surgery advertisement they had in the toilets at the movie theater in Newmarket. up on the wall of each cubicle they had an advertisement so when you sat down to wee that was right at your eye level. I remember thinking it was such clever placement as most woman have just been in and seen a movie where the woman are made up to perfection and shot in a way to make them look as glamorous as possible and then afterwards you go to have a wee and 'bam!' - they get ya while you're self esteem is low.
Clever- but kind of predatory.
Thats a bit how I feel about having an ad on the Oh Baby page. Yes its clever, yes Oh Baby is a business and advertising is what makes them money, yes if people find issue with it it has more to do with their own issues than the 'advertiser'- but it just seems a bit.... off really, to 'prey' on new Mums.

On one of the posters someone had written in vivid "you are beautiful just as you are"- gave me warm fuzzies seeing that Now thats what I think of whenever I see plastic surgery advertisements now

Agreed SimSam.

Also, I'm curious, how many of you have young daughters that occassionally look over your shoulders while you are on OhBaby? Is it a message you want them to be getting?

I can't believe what a bunch of nanas we have on here!!

No wonder people aren't open about it when they have it done.

There are plastic surgery ads and even columns in the magazines we read, the body beautiful image is out there everywhere.

We should be helping our own self esteem and that of our daughters, not relying on others to do so, and certainly not "blaming" magazines, websites etc for poor self image etc.

as a mum with a daughter, if she ever wanted surgery to boost her self esteem, i would fully support her decision. she would have to pay for it herself though.   i would much rather have a happy, healthy, confident daughter who had surgery, than
one that's unhappy, no self esteem which develops into an eating disorder because she is unhappy in her skin. no amount of talking to her is going to change the way she feels about her looks....it never did for me!

this 'being happy in your own skin' thing is something some people just can't do. i've struggled with my weight all my life and yes, i've done ww and the gym. but i just cannot get rid of the saggy belly (even before the kids!)

my mum, my MIL and my nana are bigger ladies and fine with it, so it's not like i am pressured from anywhere. DH loves me the way i am, but i myself am not happy with how i look.

it's not from looking at models in magazines, it's not seeing gorgeous slim actresses everywhere that makes me want to change how i look, it's from looking in the mirror and seeing the bulges and saggy belly that does it for me. not being confident with myself to take my kids swimming...........and an advert for plastic surgery doesn't make me feel any worse than i did before so i don't see any problem with it

JMHO!

I think we all agree that we have to help our own self-estreem, but I also dont think that at some point  businesses need to start going against the grain of conventional advertising - look at Dove and their use of women that would not be classed as perfect by the rest of the advertising world. I just think its time that more companies were getting brave and saying "its alright to have wobbly bits, its alright to have wrinkles, its alright to have grey hair....you are still beautiful".

However, I also think that human nature will always make us want to look better than we do...but I think its about making the expectations and goals REALISTIC ones, and not airbrushed ones.

Well if I'm a nana then I'm proud of it!

Why can't people be open about having plastic surgery? All I've read so far is why people don't like it for themselves and why they don't like the whole 'body beautiful' pressure in society. Just because I give my opinion on why it's not right for me doesn't mean I'm judging anyone else who has it done.

You're right, the body beautiful image IS all around us. That's the point some people are making - it was nice not to have it in our faces here.

I agree that it's my job to build up my daughters' self esteem and make them strong, but I'm not the only influencer in that respect. They will read those magazines and look at websites and watch TV and talk to their friends - there are so many places they will get bombarded with that 'perfect' message.

By voicing my opinion and standing up to the 'body beautiful' messages, I am hoping to somehow have an impact on the society my daughters and I live in. When they see me stand up to that impossible ideal (and it is impossible, airbrushing and all), they are learning to have confidence in themselves (without surgery ) and build their self esteem. Magazines and websites aren't to blame for poor self image, but they sure don't help improve things.

As far as my daughters self esteem goes, apart from telling her how beautiful and proud i am of her everyday , i'll tell her the same thing my Grandma told me .."even the prettiest stars , the best looking models ...sit on the toilet and poo as well " ..dont think ANYONE looks attractive doing that
