Topic: Home help after ops? Posted: 29 February 2008 at 5:26pm |
This is incredibly random, but google isn't helping me today so I thought I'd ask here!
I'll be having an op in the next year *fingers crossed* through public which I've been waiting for for about 4 years and have had it postponed 4 times so I'm really keen to jump at the first opportunity the give me. The thing I worry about is, is there any public funding for home help to look after Jack while I recover? It's a boob op and I'm not allowed to drive for 2 weeks, not allowed to lift much for 4 weeks which kind of sucks seeing as I won't be able to lift him out of his cot or basically do anything with him other than have cuddles.
But like I said, I need the op, it's so much worse than when I went on the waiting list. If I don't get public funding, do you know if medical insurance covers home help after publicly funded ops?
Thanks for ANY words of advice etc that people could give me. I'm starting to wonder about how we're going to work it as unfortunately because of DH's job I can't rely on him to be here when I get it done (he wasn't here any of the 4 times it's been almost done then postponed).

Yes you should be able to get it and the hospital should tell you how to organise it.
My friend had an op 2 years ago and the hospital gave her forms to get it organised.
If they don't (as it is a different DHB) have a look at your policy; I know mine does.
Is this you booby job finally???

My Southern Cross policy covers it but only if I have the surgery done privately thru an approved provider.
I did get respite care for Maya thru Akld DHB when she was really sick as I was exhausted and couldn't cope on my own so I'm sure there are provisions for your situation too.

Yep Becks it's my boob op that I was supposed to have on 2006! Just waiting to hear back about how long the wait will be, hopefully it'll be in the next few months as they said they'd fast-track me because they had to postpone it so many times.
Talked to mum about my policy, there does say something about home help, but I'm not sure if you have to be going private or public to get it. I guess I'll find out from the hospital at the time. Ta, puts my mind at ease a bit.

Yay it is finally being done. Give your insurance company a call they would be able to tell you.

It usually depends on whether you have able bodied people living with you. But because your DH cant be guaranteed to be around, I would think you will need something. It should be discussed and organised when you have your pre-op assessments etc as well. Good luck.
