Topic: Dream feeds Posted: 21 September 2007 at 8:50pm |
So now i know what a dream feed actually is, should I be doing one?
This is generally how it works in our house.
I cluster feed Tom between 5pm-8pm. he usually wakes around 11.30, 3.30 and then thru to 8.30.
I figure because he is waking himself for the feeds it isnt necessary...or maybe I just never really got the concept in the first place.
Last night I fed him at 7.30 and he made it through to 1.30 and then to 6.30....I hope this is a new trend.
What do you reckon???

I agree with Anna. I would only wake Ashleigh if she was due for a feed not long after I was going to go to bed. ie she would feed around 7.30 so be due 10.30 and I would want to go to bed at 9.30ish. But they didn't really work for us anyway as she wouldn't wake up and drink properly and normally slept a bit longer then anyway.

Sorry - I didn't see this post first!
Whatever works for you. I know a few people who let bubs sleep and demand-feed at night (one girl of 3 months is now sleeping 12 hours), but personally I wake Laura at 10.30ish, and DH usually gives her a bottle of EBM. We try not to wake her up too much - just enough so that she can suck (and no nappy change unless shes pooed). It's basically 'tanking her up' so that she can sleep for longer. She has been sleeping through since about six weeks - but then every baby is different!
FOr some babies this works, some it doesn't - but give it three nights in a row to see if it is going to work for you. Good luck...

i say dont wake a sleeping bubba for a feed unless he wakes you first!
your routine sounds like it is heading to a full 8 - 10 hour sleep - why change it by interrupting the sleep!!!
we never dream fed....if she woke i went in stuck boob in fed her, put her back, went back to sleep! no change or anything or else she woke for too long

We do the dream feed thing and it works for us. Daniel goes down sometime between 6:30-7pm, then if we leave him he would wake at 11, so we give him a dream feed at 10:30 and he sometimes sleeps right through til 6:30-7am, but sometimes will wake up for a feed around 5-5:30am and go back down.

Hi, the idea of the dream feed is not to wake them up. I pick Spencer up, shove the bottle in his face and he drinks still fast asleep then I stick him straight back to bed, no burp no nappy change. He will take practically a whole feed. So he is fed at 6.30pm in bed by 7pm, then dream fed at 10.30pm then makes it through till about 4am then back down till about 7am. If I don't dream feed him he wakes up at 11pm anyway but will then only sleep till about 2am because his sleep has been disturbed. If you only have to get up at 1.30 and then not again till 6.30 I would be inclined to not worry about it.

I dream feed Caleb if he goes down before about 8ish but we are up until about 10 or 11 at night anyway so it suits us to get him up for a feed then let him sleep until about 6-7am. If Thomas is up for three hours cluster feeding he probably needs the sleep so 11.30pm is about right for the next feed. It also means you get a sleep in. Personally I'd let it be until he's a wee bit older.

Our boys seem to be on the same feeding schedule - including the cluster feeding! I haven't tried dream feeding him yet. Mainly because I wasn't exactly sure how it worked, so this has been quite helpful to me. I don't think I'll bother with it just yet, might see what happens in the next week or so.

Yeah I didn't start until about 3 weeks ago, wasn't worth it before then as he would only go 3 hours between feeds at night

It does sound like Tom is heading in the direction of sleeping through, so I wouldn't purposely wake him for a feed unless he needs it. We used to have similar hours for Sam until she all of a sudden dropped the 3.30am feed. It was bliss
We do a dream feed with Sam and she only wakes up for about 2 seconds and then goes back to sleep with a face full of booby
We started doing them when she was around 3 months as she starting waking at 2-3am for a feed. I put her to bed at 6.30pm and go in before I go to bed at around 10.30-11pm and top her up. She will then sleep through until 6-7am.

Yeah, I think I am ok without the dreamfeed. I just wondered about it as everyone was talking about them and thought I was missing something important out. As it is Tom's feeds last night were 8pm, 12.30, 5.30, 9.30 so I think that is do-able at the moment for us. I wouldnt want to risk waking the wee one up any earlier

Hhhmmm I have been thinking about doing a dream feed to get Lauren through the night (god loves a tryer )!! or atleast so I only have to get up once!!
This is our routine for the past week or so:
5:30pm bath
6pm both boobs for 10 mins each absolute max
7pm bed
12 or 1am-ish feed
3 or 4am feed
8 or 9am feed, sleep
12pm feed, play, sleep
3pm feed, play sleep
If I put in a dreamfeed at around 10pm, will that get her through till 3 or 4am, meaning I only have to get up once?? Hopefully, just maybe????? or is our current routine going o.k, as BS said let sleeping babys sleep??!!
I am just playing around a bit to try and get a bit of a routine going on, trial and error I guess!!

Hey Peachy, I will say this again as some people don't seem to get it.
It is a DREAM feed as in the baby should still be dreaming when you feed and hence you don't wake them up.
I would give it a go, at worse she would probably wake you up at 2am but would then probably make it through till 7am and then at least you have only had to drag yourself out of bed once.
Just remember it can take about a week for them to settle when you change their routine, so the first few nights she might still wake at 12-1am out of habit.

cuppatea thanks for being so helpful!
I actually semi tried it at her 1am feed this morning. As soon as she stirred slightly I got her up with dimmed lights, fed with dimmed lights and I did change her after her feed as I could smell really wet nappies.
She didn't even wake, she had a great feed too to my surprise. Not sure why she didn't wake she normally would, but then I normally wait for her to start whimpering before getting her up, but this time I was being sneaky!
This is why I am thinking I might be able to get away with it. What do you think?

If I was you I would give it a try for 3-4 nights and just see how it goes. Don't nappy change at 10pm she should be good to get through till 3ish, remember she will stay in one nappy when she does sleep through.
