Topic: crying so much hes pooping! Posted: 18 July 2007 at 10:16pm |
Andy just won't go to sleep. He keeps pooping himself! We've had two really good nights where he has gone straight to sleep but still woken for 5 feeds! What should I do?? Will the poop eventually run out??! Am just sooo exhausted and feeling like crap plus about to run out of FB! Was so hoping for an easy start to the night. We have only been doing controlled crying for a few nights as we absolutely loath it! I so want to curl up in a cave for the rest of winter!

will he sleep with poo's in naps? I only ask as you say he wakes up 5 times - just thought if you could wait till the next time he wakes up before u change his napy - I know this isn't ideal but getting him out to change him doesn't help the crying.
If you do need to change him i would with out talking to him - looking him in the eye , no interaction at all with him, change him quickly and put him back to bed. I know it sounds harsh but if control crying is to work its what needs to be done (I have been there )
Its so hard to hear them cry and will make you feel worse when you know he is getting upset and pooing . Just remember he will still love u in the morn and when hes old will not remember. He wil still smile at you in the morn when he wakes up

could he be teething to be causing the increase in pooping?
i know we had night time issues with haleigh when she was teething (still do).
controlled crying isnt easy we tried it and we caved in so many times.
i agree with annc if you do need to change the nappy in the night, try make it as quick as possible and no communication they do learn, jsut takes a bit of patience.

Has he started solids yet? That may be why he's wanting so many feeds in the night.
ETA: It's hard doing CIO technique for the first time with an older baby. We had to do this for Briona at 6mos and it was very hard and took a while as well. I learned to listen for the pattern (after a peak, the spaces between crying should get longer and longer... unless there is something wrong, like hunger). Sometimes with Bria I had no idea whether I needed to get her up or leave her to it, so I'd make myself a cuppa and drink it out of earshot. It took me 10 minutes and usually after then I had calmed down and was able to find that pattern.
It's hard, but it does pay off.

Oh Laura, I would head down to the Family Centre on Albert Street and get them to look after Andy while you have a sleep. They are really good there, ring them first to see what they say.

Thanks for the help. It's just so hard! I always swore I'd never leave him to cry. But after 8 months of feeding him to sleep and that not even working I'm having to do the crying thing. Is so not the kind of mother I want to be. I just feel so awful about it. I only leave Andy for 5 minutes at a time. He did 3 poos before he went to sleep last night. Was up until after midnight! He did only wake twice after that thank goodness! Propably due to the Pamol I gave him as I was wondering if his teeth were playing up again as he was just so miserable. I think they must be as he has been a little demon again this morning.
Yes Andy is on solids. He is still BF every 3-4 (if I'm lucky!) hours during the night. I know he probably doesn't really need it and it's just a habit but I'm just too tired to fight him about it. I would rather just plug him in so he stops crying... Each night I keep thinking "tonight will be better". But it never is. When I get some sleep then I'll have a go at getting him back to sleep without a boob, one wake at a time.
Is there such thing as too much pooping??! Yesterday and Tuesday Andy has been doing soo many poopies. Like around 6/7 a day! Do you think I'm giving him something that isn't agreeing with him?
If only it was safe to DRINK when BF lol Will go have a nice glass of water instead

Are you sure hes not teething because Jack used to do the hugest smelliest poos when he was teething like the whole bed would be covered in poo
Maybe you could try offering him a drink of water instead at night time and increase his solids during the day.
Have you read the no cry sleep solution? there are some really good ideas in there feeding him until hes drowsy and then putting him to bed, if he protests try holding the bottom of his chin so his mouth is shut. If he still cries pick him up and do that again, eventually he will give in and go to sleep. There are heaps of ideas like that, that may take a bit but they do work really well and you don't have to listen to your baby screaming.

The pooing def could be teething related as it looks like three more are coming though. Didn't have excess poopies with the first five though. Things are never the same though are they! Just when ya think you've got things sussed everything changes.
I have been feeding Andy until he's sleepy or asleep and then burping him which wakes him up a bit and then popping him in his cot. Sometimes this works really well and other times....well... No comment!
I'm giving Andy lots of food today to see if that helps. We currently munching on apple, toast and fig porriage. Yummy!
I've been trying really hard to get Andy asleep by 8pm, having dinner as a family at 6:30 etc. Andy just slept for 1.5 hours though so I don't know when to time this afternoon sleep so that he's tired enough to start his night time boobie at 7:30. I've been trying so hard to get a routine going but when the nights are all over the place we don't have an ish waking up time so the daytime sleeps are a bit random. Yesterday he had his afternoon sleep later than normal so I moved bedtime back an hour. Everything hit the fan!! The sooner Andy can run the better.
I'll take him out and we can run around and around the block to tire him out. Lol

Have you tried getting in touch with Louise at the sleepstore? we were having all sorts of problems with Matthew too & I emailed Louise & she gave me lots of tips & things to try & suggested a routine from the book save our sleep which really worked for us. I couldn't do the CIO thing, but by following the routines etc in that book, I didn't need to. I know it won't work for everyone, but may be worth a shot?

I just bought a DVD from there. But after reading the little booklet that came with it I dont think it's us. A bit too tough on the babies and unrealistic I think. Maybe I'll try emailing her when I have 2 free hands. lol

Laura I can email you a program that Claire sent me. I just started using it last night with Alize. He has always been a terrible sleeper and waking nonstop thru the night. Night one was last night and wasnt as bad or as scary/sad as I thought it would be.

Oh, Laura - sounds like we coulda kept each-other company today in our miseries! Are the poops constipated, or normal? Because sometimes when they're constipated they don't poop it all out, and do little poops here and there instead. If they're normal, maybe it's the figs setting him off? Remember thought that feeding stimulates the bowel, so more night feeds = more poops for some babies.
About the cry it out thing - wouldn't it be great to know already which would be more stressful at the end of the day - sticking the CIO plan out 'till it works, or continuing night feeds (and sleep deprivation)... be great if we all already knew how much longer they'd go on and whether or not CIO will work in the end, eh! But I guess you've tried one approach already, and stuck that one out too, so you know how well that one works for Andy and you. I rekon that since you've got the stickablilty to carry on with the 'feed it out' approach for so long, you've got what it takes to stick out whatever technique you choose to try next! At least if you give it a few weeks you'll know you've given it your best shot, ya? You're a GREAT mummy - don't forget it!!

Wahoo!!! Andy is asleep. Have had a very good sleeping day today. Tonight he went down with a fuss. Woke 15 mins later with a big poopie and then went back to sleep within half an hour. He looks so cute. Nothing more beautiful than a sleeping baby!
Now if only it would continue and I get a few hours of sleep all strung tog ... Andy started crawling today. Exciting! Maybe that has tired him out??
Andie his poops are normal. HUGE! Today was Andy's first day on figs so that won't be causing any problems.
I'll PM you Kels. Definately keen!
