Not a silly idea, Anna. Years and years ago when my littlies were babies (teenagers now), I did just that. I went around local workshops etc... (mechanics and the like are good business, love their savouries and filled rolls) sold heaps, well enough to get by on for extras, while hubby worked. Take orders too. Just went to each place, we were in an industrial area in Auckland at the time. That was a long time ago. I had my sister to do it with me, pays to have a helping hand and anything that doesnt sell, well you get to keep it all comes back. Also the thing that someone said about I.R.D giving $1200, that is a one off payment and only if you don't receive Parental leave payments, its either one or the other sorry, at the time your baby is born. This time around we are having another littlie and we are in a better situation, hubby works and earns good money, I quit work and will be spending time with baby, for a few years at least. but I know I will still want to do something, so am thinking of making things, crafts etc... as a hobby but also to sell for extra at fairs and things, just for a little bit for me and baby. Remember I have teenagers too now and they are going to be a big help.
Time is important with ours babies, but I can tell you now, I spent all the time in the world with my other two and they would say when I did go back to work, Oh its not fair you should be at home blah blah and when I was they didnt appreciate it much. Honestly I would have to tell them things I did with them in the first 5 years, they couldn't remember. My life was them! I enjoyed myself though. But I have known mums that went straight back to work (they had to) and their relationships with their kids are fine. I hope things work out for you, but really look at all your options before making a decision, no harm in trying aye.
