Topic: OT - Meal Ideas? Posted: 24 July 2006 at 6:45pm |
This has nothing really to do with babies but I'm out of ideas..
I am a vegetarian. I eat no meat what so ever but will eat things like cheese and eggs.
DH however loves his meat.
We are in need of more ideas for yummy meals that we can both enjoy. DH usually cooks his own meat and adds it into the meals but we have run out of new stuff to try.
He loves all sorts of foods like thai, chinese, japanese, mexican, you name it he will eat it. However my mum had no idea how to deal with a vegetarian kid on a farm! so all I got fed as a kid was bread, potato and junk food (and that is no exageration) so my taste buds have a little catching up to do with DH. Although I eat a ton more than I use to.
Any ideas on new things we could try would be sooo great. We are getting bored with the same old food. It would be amazing too if they were low in fat as well. As one would imagine, growing up eating the diet that I did I have a couple of kg's to shift

have you tried tortillas? we introduced them to our friends last night and they loved them. You could do a vege mix with mushrooms, capsicum well anything really and hubby can put in diced chicken or beef. I make up my own sauce from sweet chilli and tereaki sauce but you could have satay or whatever and they are soooo easy. we also add lettuce, cheese, salsa and sour cream

I make a few vege meals.. spanikopita (spinach and feta pie with filo pastry), fresh pasta with stir fried veges and a sauce, quice with creamed corn and eggs and some veges, you can add meat to this or leave it out.. I'll try and find the recipe if you want this one. There's also a potato and kumara with curry with lentils that you cook in coconut cream too..
you should go to www.foodlovers.co.nz or maggi etc online and look for recipes too

We have tried some websites but the problem I generally find is that they have some totally weird ingredient in them or they are hard to make lol (i can cook, but I'm not a fantastic cook) lol

Go get the weird ingredients when you go shopping!!!
Try to look at recipes and work your shop around planned meals. That way you won't run out of ideas and get to try new things!

Mexican would be excellent because you substitue the meat for beans for you to eat and hubby can add in chicken or mince depending on what you are having. And almost any Mexican recipe can be either or...You could pick up some of those Old El Paso packs from the supermarket and just add meat or beans.....
We love taco's, nachos, enchilda's....the list goes on and they are a really easy meal to put together and tasty.

Beef and Black bean and Rice (could be fried rice):
Chop up desired amount of broccoli, cauliflower, onion, zuccini, carrot, mushroom and capsicum- whatever veges you'd want in it.
Chop up just thin strips of meat for the hubby and let him cook that in another pan until it's tender- doesnt have to be chunky pieces of meat- just thin like stir fry strips are great.
Fry the veges in a small amount of oil until golden but not mushy and then add the a beef and black bean sauce (just buy a kang ton bottle from the supermarket)- let that simmer for a little while.
Prepare your plain rice or add some chopped up fried egg and peas and whatever else to make fried rice.
Then when you're ready- serve up your veges and sauce mix with the rice you want and let hubby add meat to the left over sauce and veges and he can tip that ontop of his rice.
I LOVE IT!!!

I eat lots of omeletts, that you can add or subtract meat from. eggs are a good source of protein too!

Try this website: www.vegweb.com
It's got lots of really good recipes, and lots of really simple things to make without all the weird ingredients.
I usually have a browse at work (naughty) before I do supermarket shopping and print out 3 or so recipes and find that is the easiest way to meal plan.
Also you should buy that Alison Holst 'Meals without Meat' book. It's such a staple book and all the recipes are sort of geared up to be appealing to meat eaters who freak out having to cook for veges and also veges who are trying to cook vege meals that are appealing to meat eaters
