Topic: Hospital Waiting Lists/Times Posted: 05 February 2010 at 7:36pm |
Hi,
I have been referred to have my tonsils out.
I only recently got private health care and at the mo not sure if it will cover this or not.
So if I went through the public health system how does it work, how likely is the wait going to be - how on earth do you find this stuff out.
I've been told the op will cost about 4k and whilst that is not money I have lying around I cannot keep getting this sick, its driving me nuts.
Does anyone know anything about all this and is there anything I could/should be doing.
My Dr just says I need to tell her public/private and she then write the appropriate letter.
On a 2nd note has anyone else had their tonsils out at 30 - I know its normally something you have done as a kid

I had mine out at 19 and it was great!! The pain after the surgery was so much less than the constant pain I was in my tonsils.
Not sure about the insurance thing though. Just ring your company to find out

My friend had hers out at 20 and she recovered quickly, didn't think it was too bad.
I agree, just call your insurance company and ask if you're covered - no harm in asking!

My friend is getting hers out, she was referred mid December and is getting them out the the end of the month, so about a 2 and a half month wait, but you can queue jump if you're more serious I believe.
ETA: You should be able to get a rough idea of how long the wait will be from your doctor. I had a referral letter sent off last week, got a response today, but doctor said my waiting list would be about 6 months for surgery once I heard from the surgeon himself.

Yup people get bumped up and down the list depending on how "serious" they are considered.

I was on a w/l for a yr & then went private my med insurance covered it. So if you can go pvt that would be your quickest option. I was 22 when I had mine out.
Your GP will write a referral to the hospital & they will grade it on urgency, 6 mths being non urgent & if you are on that list chances are you will be bumped back because of urgent cases. It may take awhile to hear back. This of course all depends on the case load of the hospital. So if you want a set quick operation date go private, if you don't mind awaiting or fitting in wherever then go public.

A lot of DHBs are increasing their elective surgery so that may help your case.
Mine are going up and down all the time and an ENT friend said that adult tonsil surgery is pretty brutal but sounds like the recovery isn't too bad.
I'm assuming that's the answer to why you're feeling so exhausted? Good luck with getting them out.

I had mine out at 18 but done privately. I hated it and it took a while to recover but once it was all healed up it was sooo good. Going from getting tonisilitis a few imes a month to nothing is amazing. I hope you manage to get it done soon as

I've had tio have two operations through the public system in the last 18 months and was told up to six months. First one was one month wait and second one is scheduled for week after next so about two months wait, and it would have been sooner if not for Xmas and my surgeon being away for three weeks.
My brother had his tonsils out at about forty and found it okay, he is divorced so arranged for my cousin to pick him up and look after him that night (as she is a nurse) and not to have the kids for that weekend and week. He missed his coffees but seemed happy eating ice cream and mushy stuff for a few days. I think he had the op on Friday and back to work on Monday. He was tired from the anaesthetic though, it hit him more the next day.
