Topic: Resigning - EEK! Posted: 01 December 2008 at 10:13am |
Ok, so I've been putting it off and putting it off...
But I have two weeks until I absolutely HAVE to hand in my notice. I'd really like to do it tomorrow, before my bos gets completely frazzled by the pre-Christmas shopping rush.
I am struggling with what to write.
I've worked there for 5 years and have a good personal relationship with my boss, too.
So I don't want it to sound stuffy and formal, but still formal enough so it doesn't sound like I'm super-happy-and-over-the-moon (which I really am!!) to be resigning.
Help!!
I would REALLY appreciate any tips/ideas.
Or even, if you're happy to share, your resignation letters/templates, as guidance.
DH says;
"All you need to say is 'thanks for the memories, I'm out'
Thanks in advance

LOL
I tend to start with "I'm sorry to inform you that I am resigning as of ...", then go into the more informal thing - reasons for leaving, what I've really appreciated about my boss/workplace.
Can you phone them or see them in person - that gives it a more personal touch.
Will keep looking for my resignation letter but it takes the format above (one short paragraph per point)

I would see them in person and explain so that it is a personal thing then hand them the formal letter with the dates and signed and all the other *fun* stuff that goes into those letters..... best of both worlds

I always just google that kind of thing and put in all my own relevant details and email it through to my boss or print it and take it into them

Thanks
I'm definitely planning on going in to do it in person.
My boss knows it's coming, so it won't be a shock to her.
But my contract requires a letter, also.
So chances are she won't even read my letter, but for future reference I want it to be a goodie

That sounds perfect. Then you go and talk to her and tell her how sad you are to leave them but how excited you are about spending more time with hannah an dhow much you love being a SAHM. Then say here is the "formal" bit and give her the letter.
edited cos I'm having trouble with quotes today

This was mine:
(edited to remove personal stuff but you get the idea)
[Address]
Dear [name],
With regret I am writing to advise you that I will be unable to return to work at the end of my maternity leave on the 3rd January 2009. Unfortunately this is not a viable option for me at this time.
Please consider this letter notice to terminate my employment with [company name]
I have greatly enjoyed my time at the company and this decision has not been an easy one. I feel extremely fortunate to have worked in such a dynamic environment and will watch with interest the company's future endeavours.
Many thanks
[my name]
