Taine and Jake both liked tummy time and were both smaller babies (7pound and just under) but I did find that I could lie down and put them on me - tummy to tummy - and they adored that. perhaps you could do that as Caitlin's tummy time.

That is exactly what I did lizzle - Charlotte was 8lb9 and cried from day dot at tummy time. She still cries today so I dont bother.

I used to put her on my tummy and lift her arms up and make it into a game, she loved it and so did I. She isn't crawling at the moment, more shuffling, but I am not personally worried if she doesn't crawl. She is very strong in her legs and will actually walk if you hold her hands.

So I guess I would also say not to worry. Crawling comes from sitting up anyways rather than tummy time. They have to master the sitting thing first.

Thanks ladies

Miss "I'll do what I wanna do and when I wanna do it" has now decided that sitting is just as much fun as tummy time and would rather stand

Have you guys been watching the repeats of nought to 5?
THey suggested tummy time on a beachball/ swiss ball and gently rolling them, that could be a more enjoyable way to have tummy time.

yup - tried the swiss ball thing too. Just ended up with a swiss ball covered in baby puke

Doesn't matter what time I try (between feeds), she always pukes when I put her on her tummy The ball was actually worse for this as it pushed on her tummy even more!

What time are the repeats on? I saw a couple when I was still on leave and they were really good! I'll have to try to record them

completly understand what you mean about having a full on baby so young!Mya is 5motnhs and already crawling everywhere! It is scary! lol

Mya wasnt a big baby (born 7.14pds) but hated tummy time until around 3-4months because she couldnt lift her head properly and just wanted to be looking up and around constantly. Luckily we had one of those play mats from farmers that has the blow up ring (2semi circles that velcro together) we used one half to prop her up on her tummy. It was a win win situation because she was on her tummy and she was able to look all around, rather then at the floor! So if any of you are finding yourselves in a similar situation this trick is well worth trying! She has always been one to love her feet (has been demanding to stand since she found her feet!) and this was a great way for her to kick and learn to push herself with her feet and she now has great leg muscles. As i said before she is already crawling (skills i really believe she learned while spending so much time on the ring!) but is only just getting the hang of sitting up.

I heard that babies need 300 hours of crawling to get their brain connections going but it doesn't matter when they crawl as long as they do. I bet all the kids who didn't crawl as babies can crawl now if they wanted to so their brain connections were made because they know how to crawl if that makes sense.

My sister never crawled, she bumshuffled, and she learnt somewhere during her Early Childhood Ed degree that crawling is crucial to spatial awareness development and co-ordination, so that has become her excuse for being clumsy

Maya was 9lb1oz, born with great head control and absolutely hated tummy time with a vengeance. She refused to roll or crawl, and at 7mths I was desperately trying to encourage her to commando creep. She finally rolled at 7 1/2 mths, and crawled just after 8, but by 10 mths she was walking unassisted and she's been on the go ever since.

The gremlins on the other hand were smallish (but not for 37 weekers!) but have always loved tummy time, and are already (at just on 3 mths) commando creeping. They both hold their heads up brilliantly, Mercedes can get up onto her knees (can't get onto her hands yet tho)and I would say it won't be long before they are away crawling. I started them on tummy time after every feed at a week old and now they have 10 minutes or so during each play period, or longer if they don't crack it. And they always spill a bit, so I try to leave it as long as possible after their feed (they have time on their backs first).

Unfortunately not all can, I think I mentioned in a previous post about the video I saw and the kids they studied could no crawl. And I really mean that at 5 years old they could not do it. They also could not touch thier left hand to right leg or right hand to left leg. I'm not saying that it happens to all kids who don't learn to crawl or do the exercises to help thier cross movement or spatial awareness but I do think it is something to be aware of.

Even if your baby doesn't crawl I've really come to believe that at least doing the exercises is really important. As I say, I've noticed the world of difference in Maddie since I started them.

You can get them off the SPARC website or I think they will send you the books.

The ones I've been doing with Maddie are:

Touch feet together - repeat 6 times
Touch hands together - repeat 6 times
Touch opposite hand to foot - repeat 6 times
Same on other side - (you get the idea by now! )
take foot across body and touch floor (6 times - this also teaches them rolling)
Repeat other side.
To teach them to roll you raise one arm and pull the opposite leg across the body and over they go (Maddie loves this one!!).
Repeat opposite side.

All the ones that involve crossing the body are the cross movement ones. They help connect all those important pathways in the brain.

During tummy time you can also press your hands against thier feet and they will learn to push off.

There are tons of others but these are just the ones we're doing at the moment. We're also using the swiss ball and rolling her around on that to help her spatial awareness.
