Topic: my poor dog Posted: 27 September 2006 at 10:15am |
as some of you know we have a newfoundland dog called max, well he is really sick and im not sure if i should just let him go. he is in pain and yelping everytime he moves, has benn for two days and we took him to the vet and they said he has arthritis, an infection and a lump they are getting checked out. problem is the drugs they gave him arent working and he is still in pain plus as horrible as it sounds we cant afford to keep going to the vet, last night cost us $250!!!!! He is 11 years old so really old for a newfie but maybe he will get better but then for how long before it happens again. When do we say enough is enough?

I have never had a family pet like that so I can't feel the pain you guys have. But when he is costing that much it maybe better off to put him to sleep and get a new puppy.

We're having the same thing at the moment. My stepmum's dog is 16 years old and suffering terribly with arthritis and heart problems.
Some days he seems well though and that makes it harder to decide if we'd be doing the best thing for him by letting him go with dignity.
It is a horrible decision to have to make and my heart goes out to you.
I hope that you can come to a decision you're all comfortable with quickly.

ignore the cost issue...you and i both know we would find ways to pay for our fur babies...
The decision is should he continue to suffer and if not then there is only one decision to make - the hardest one of all!
I had to do that earlier this year with my 17 year old cat who suddenly had a stroke and couldnt move back legs...they may have been able to help but his eyes told me it was ok to let him go....

Sorry to hear you're going through this Robyn, but I can sympathise - we had an 18 and a half year old cat who started to lose the use of her back legs to arthritis, and then her kidneys started to fail... it was hard even at that stage to make the decision to put her to sleep, because she'd even come all the way over from Canada with us. It worked out fairly "well" though because the vet came to our house to give her the shot (we'd been using the same one for years), and we even got a sympathy card from them afterwards.
In other words though (forgive my rambling) you'll know in your heart what the right decision is, and don't forget we're all here to support you

We had a new foundland to and he was gorgeous plus he had the best temperment!
Sadly however we ended up putting him down due to arthritus.
We figured it was unfair to have him carry on in such pain.
Good luck!!!
