We are surpose to be going to a family xmas party for the kids on sunday but my nephew has just come down with the chicken poxs and they are still going to take him his sister has not had it yet either but im sure she will get it sometime to. kalem has had it so im not worried about him but i really don't want madison to get it as she is still so little. Im just so angry that my brother thinks it will be alright and that madison won't get it. he thinks he can't give it to anyone now the spots are out but I have been told they need to blister first before hes not. im just so upset that all they are thinking of is themselves and not other peoples kids plus there was going to be a big family photo taken to and madison will miss out on being in it.  tell me what you guys think? do i have a right to be upset and angry? or am i being over senstive as its the time of the month lol?

I know the kidlets have to stay home from creche until the spots have crusted over... so judging by that, I'd think the kidlet should stay home until then too.

I mean, you can't protect kids from catching everything, but parents need to take a little bit of responsibility for contagious stuff. Have you told your brother you are worried about it?

And have you had any contact with the kidlet in the last few weeks? I'm pretty sure chicken pox are contagious for about 10 days before the spots show.

You are right to be upset - they are contagious from 5 days before the spots come out until the very last blister HAS CRUSTED OVER.. ie - has a scab on it. we were not sure Ayja would get them - however there is a 14 day incubation period - and she had obviously not been in contact with them till Paris got them.. hence why 2 weeks later she got them - and in that time she had been at daycare and to a birthday party in the 5 days before the spots came out so was exposed to ALOT of kids while she was contagious.

I really think that is very selfish knowlingly taking him when he is still contagious. I am sure that any adults that have not yet had them would not appreciate it either.

Ayja has been home now for 2 weeks and only went back to daycare yesterday.. the spots can come out over 5 days and take about that again until the last one crusts over.. the first ones may crust earlier, but the last ones to appear - are the last ones to crust.

My daughter got them at 5months old - glad she got them over and done with. I don't know where she got them from as was not at daycare and her brother had had them years before. There is a slight chance she won't get them and if you wanted to go you could try and keep her as far away for the pox child (sorry dunno their name) When Brooke got them a friend whose baby was the same age brought her around and put them right together in the contagious time and the other kid didn't get them - very surprised as she was exposed to Brooke for quite some time.
But I would if you are not happy to talk to your Brother. Not dair on others if they aren't happy with it either

You have every right to be annoyed! A couple of weeks ago my nephew got chicken pox, and my SIL was still taking him everywhere -- out to restaurants, over to the grandparents' house, to the shops, etc. It made me SO MAD. She was supposed to bring him over to play with Em and I had to call and ask her not to because I didn't want Em exposed to chicken pox yet. SIL got all snippy with me, telling me that her doctor had told her my nephew wasn't contagious once the spots were showing, and that he wasn't *that* sick. I actually had to call my Plunket nurse, my daughter's GP AND the National Immunisation people to get info on chicken pox before SIL would believe that *maybe* she should have kept my nephew home...

That said, it took me a lot of courage to ring her up and ask her not to bring my nephew over, because I hate confrontations! It is really, really insensitive of your brother and SIL to take your nephew to a family gathering when he has a contagious illness. Especially because exposure to chicken pox can be really bad for people with compromised immune systems (elderly people especially) and pregnant women! Can you get up some courage to call and tell your brother, gently but firmly, that bringing his ill child is not good for anybody involved?

Yes I got pox over Christmas the year I was 18 and it was not fun being house-bound, especially with having to abort plans to go meet DH's (boyfriend at the time tho) extended family for the first time
