I was actually thinking the very same thing today. They treated like it was a day out while people in Samoa were killed.
What would these people do if a really big disaster hits? Will they be at the beach again waiting for the wave? Sitting on a fault line waiting for the next quake? I mean, seriously.

I was disgusted in the people that took their children to the beach to look as well. I don't understand where they are coming from!!! Even though we are well away from the beach in the Mount, we still headed for the hills, and packed the car and left in plenty of time. When you have a family you do everything you can to protect them, not put them in the face of danger! We didn't "wait and see" if the wave would arrive, it's ALWAYS better to be safe, than sorry. So disrespectful for the ones that lost their lives, and homes in Samoa and Tonga.
Even after the boxing day tsunami, people still don't comprehend the seriousness of a 1 metre wall of water!

I was thinking the same as well - and I was also extremely disappointed that the media interviewed these nit-wits, some of who were laughing and joking about how much of a let-down it was! All the while concerned friends and families would have been watching for any information they could muster.
Now thats poor taste!

Equally disgusted, I think when they filmed those interviews they didn't realise how many people had lost lives - but to make light of it, is just so wrong and imagine waiting on a pier of all places to see a giant wave.
Beyond stupid

the people that said how "disappointed" and "let down" they were, made me so upset. we have family in the cooks that were luckily spared from it all, but it is a tad close to home for a lot of our friends and family

Agreed.
The media can be incredibly irresponsible when it comes to reporting.
But it goes to show the mentality of some.
What I shudder to think (after the obvious "WTF, morons!" thoughts) is that NZ has an awesome reputation in the tourism industry.
Imagine the thoughts running through tourists heads while they're watching our news coverage.
Tacky.

i know its a bit ridiculous aye. yea nothing happened and it was almost guaranteed from the start the government were playing it safe but its still incredibly stupid. i think ppl dont realise that its not a 1m wave that would crash on the shore and dissipate again but a 1m high wave that is 1m above sea level for miles coming forward with a hell of a force that would just stop when it hits the shore. man ppl are thick.
