does any one here have or had or poss may be contemplating getting an OE au pair in?

any insight into how about doing it in NZ would be helpfful as we want to be setting up for one if we have another child. We would get one from USA, Europe most likely (we have asian language covered from Aunty EE so thought another insight for Ella would be cool).

I mean by au pair - a live in, full timer, not a slave, but "mothers help" - part of the family. NOT a nanny etc...

Also if anyone knows what kinda costs etc they are looking at now....hving done it myself i want someone else to experience the same...altho I will have to train BSDH to behave before one arrives of course

Woohoo - I rock!

http://www.aupairdownunder.com/

And I believe that it is around 150-200 a week, plus room/meals.

Sarah who looks after Miss S and Master X who you know used to Nanny Danvis and Zalia before she went to Nanny S and Z
anyhow Danvis and Zalias mum gets aupairs form Switzerland and Sweden I think and has done so since Sarah left her.
She is a school teacher and instead of getting money the aupair does the housework and helps with the kids
If you pm me I can give you her phone number as one of her aupairs couldnt drive and I used to take Danvis in the car with Caitlyn to kindy

cool will do. I would pay them their "pocket money" - i think that is required for part of the visa or something...and def dont just want one to do housework etc - my first placement in usa was mainly that and i hated it! i want ella to learn, a new baby to be nurtured and also for someone to feel part of the family as i was in my second placement.

LOL my mum was an au pair yeaaaars ago before we were born, she learnt to speak Italian in one placement, I think she enjoyed it.

I considered getting one instead of a nanny when I had the gremlins coz it would be way cheaper but I decided I can't share my living space, plus there are certain obligations with regards to exposing them to NZ culture and experiences and I wasn't sure I was up for that.

LOL we get "family" and friends over most years from USA or tag ons from other places from time to time so are well used to showing people around NZ - in fact we are consideing setting up a B and B in a few years time....so will be plenty of tourists around LOL

Def will be a cheaper option for us tho with full time DC costing a bomb for two kids...and would give us options with work times etc....

Surely you could just drop her off in South Auckland and let her roam for a day... that's pretty close to Once were Warriors yeah?
