Topic: Co-Sleeping Posted: 25 October 2006 at 8:26pm |
We recently moved (like a week and a half ago) into a new house. The idea was to get Charlotte into her own room but since that time, I have found it impossible to get her to sleep in her own cot let alone room!
Does anyone out there have any ideas of how I can get her back into her own bed then into her own room? We moved her cot into our room again (this is how it had been in the old place since birth). I am so tired, after spending the last wee while perched on the edge of the bed every night. But it beats the 6-7 times she wakes in her own cot.
She just seems to sleep so much better when in our bed!
HELP!??!!!

Georgia it sounds like she is being fussy at nights? I hate doing it myself, but you might have to be tough and only get up to her (in the cot) if she has actually been sleeping and it has been long enough that she might actually be hungry instead of just fussy.
Has she got a settling toy or blankie? That might help.

You might have to try the controlled crying thing I can't quite remember the details but one of the other mummies will. It's basically leaving her for a little longer each time before you go in so she learns that you will come when she cries but it's not worth the wait.

yeah sorry have to agree with the others, you might have to play hard ball. Is there anyway you can get a good nights sleep and prepare yourself for a sleepless night. Ive heard it only takes a week or so of doing it continuously to get them into the routine but chopping and changing probably wont help the situation. Good luck.

Do you want to co-sleep? I know lots of people do it.. I can find some resources for you if you want to head that way.. I didn't myself, I have a wriggler and she kicks us now if she's ever in our bed..

Georgia if Ella G cries i leave her for 10 mins, go in put a dummy in her mouth walk out without talking to her, leave her for another 10 mins, do it again and if shes not settled by then i get her up.
I have never had to get her up ;) Does she have a cot mobile or anything? I have a fisher price aquarium thingee that is amazing it plays nursery rhymes with a light show and ella goes right to sleep.

I have found that a cot mobile or lightshow (both of which we have) entertain her for the time they are on then she cries until we put them on again - needless to say, we gave up on those.
I have started encouraging her to take Eli (a stuffed Elephant) with her to bed, ours or hers. So she associates sleep with him.
We co slept while I was breast feeding and it was great but she is now too big and I sleep on the edge all night. Its rather tiring.
We all have colds at the moment so I spoke to the plunket nurse about it who told me to get her well and progressively move her into her bed then back into her room. She also mentioned the controlled crying thing, which we will also start trying once she is in her own bed.
Whew!

Caitlin is much younger than Charlotte, but when we first brought her home from the hospital she wouldn't sleep anywhere except in our bed. The best advice we were given was to put her in her cot/basinette with the top you wore for the day (i.e. something that has your smell on it). That worked for us and she's never slept in our bed since (unless Mummy wants snuggles after Daddy goes to work ).

I did try putting my dressing gown on top of her covers the other night. It worked for a while but she still seems to wake up. I know its going to take some time to get it perfect and until we are all well, I can't fight it (I need my sleep even if I am perched on the edge!!!!)

Honestly too, I think half my problem is that I am too soft on her.....my fault!

picture her still sleeping with you at the age of ten...my aunt co slept with her baby and truly the kid could not go to sleep without her beside her...and it lasted for 10 years!!! That should be an incentive to stay strong!!!

how about extra covers on her?
Caitlin is just like me and wakes up if she's cold (when I say cold I mean she likes to be REALLY snug)
Just another thought - how about going to a Plunket Settling group? We did that also. The advice is so good that we just did it ALL .
Evening bath
Massage
Lots of evening quiet time if not sleeping
Radio on in her room so she thinks there are people with her
Night light
Wheat bag
damp breast pad in her cot (when I was feeding her)
Worn t-shirt
I'm too scared to do a bit of trial and error see what method actually worked, I like my sleep too much now!

Last night was a huge success. I have an electric blanket which I put on her cot and her bed was all toastie when I put her into it. I also gave her a HUGE bottle right before bed and put an extra blanket, doubled over, on her bed too. She slept in her own bed from 9-2 then 2.15-6.30ish. Which is a record at this house!!!
Charlotte also loves being extra warm - Plunkets recommendations for heating the room and their beds is a bit off for Charlotte - she is too cold at those temperatures!

I am feeling better yes. Sleeping better too. Last night wasn't as successful but she still slept from about 9-2 then 2.30-5 in her own bed. Probably doesn't help that Daddy is sick and didn't seem to stop coughing!!!
