first, ask yourself if he is generally happy etc, when he sleeps, is he settled? does he have plenty of wet and dirty nappies, and is he gaining weight well? if so, then he's more than likely getting enough. does he wake fully, or does he just cry out? we found that alot of the time, we were getting Ayja up when if we left her for a few mins, she would settle back off to sleep. also, it could depend on how long baby stays up for. my plunket nurse said at her age, ayja should only stay up for about an hour. so after an hour, we put her to bed, or sooner if she starts showing tired signs or getting gumpy or crying. it takes her about 5 - 15 mins to go to sleep, sometimes she just lies there and drifts off, other times she will cry on an off and taper off to sleep. if baby gets overtired they can sometimes not sleep well and wake up sooner... sounds silly, but it's true.
i hope things get better for you, especially with a toddler to contend with as well.

thanks, that makes me feel much better, i think its just your so much more emotional when you have had no sleep or very little i would feel so much better even if i got a couple of hours in a row, but im just worried hes not getting enough he has loads of wet naps etc, i am buying an electric pump soon. i think we will just have to move him out as well i cant handle the crying if im right there i just wanna pick him up.

Good luck. We did what Janine does with not letting Maya stay up longer than an hour in the first few months, that way she didn't get overtired.
I did find tho that she never seemed to sleep longer than 45 minutes during the day, but then would sleep thru all night, and even now she is the same - no day sleep at all but a good sleeper at night.

I read somewhere that 45 mins is one sleep cycle...

yeah that's about right, and when they get to a certain stage of sleep they are very easily woken by little things and if they aren't well settled, or overhungry/tired they sometimes will cry out and wake themselves at that point. a settled baby can usually sleep through with maybe only a small squeak....hence why leaving them for a couple of mins might help them resettle themselves...or if you wanna check them, don't go walking into the room talking to them, have a peek first or you actually might wake them properly by talking to them.

I'm so naughty, if I go out at night and leave Maya at home with Willie I always go in and 'talk' to her when I get home. Sometimes she just stirs, other times she opens her eyes and looks at me like "get lost Mama I'm sleeping". Willie growls me...

Dont know if this is at all helpful as I have no experience - yet!!. My sis was having trouble with her twins sleeping. She now recommends this book by Gina Ford - The new contented little baby book. She has just taken out of it what she wants cos it sounds like the author is quite regimented, but her boys are now sleeping heaps better.
