Topic: What do you say? Posted: 10 January 2007 at 4:59pm |
I went into the local village with my friend this afternoon, and Olivia always attracts a lot of attention whether I have the storm cover up or down.
People are always so complemetary about how attractive, animated and friendly she is towards strangers which is nice. But I am starting to feel a little bit embarrassed because when we go out people say it to me about her, they either ignore my friends baby (who is slightly older and just as cute!) or add on the end "Oh and your little girl is a bonnie one" sort of like "but not as cute as her".
I feel really bad about it, I always tell people that taking Olivia for a walk through town is a bit like walking with a celebrity, she just attracts attention so terribly.
I have no idea how to fix it either, my friend would never be annoyed and even if she was would never say anything (she's a REALLY good friend). She has commented on it though once. After a lady called Olivia "just simply beautiful" and her daughter "a bonnie one", she said "Casey gets a lot more of the bonnie comments now and a lot less of the beautiful ones" I was a bit stunned mullet and didn't know what to say to that comment...
What do you say or do if this happened to you?

I would have been a bit stunned too, but probably would have said something back along the lines of "What makes you say that?" And just kept saying it until I got an answer, or dropped it... doesn't seem to be worth worrying *too* much about unless you know it's really bothering your friend.

Oh I have the same problem with Zaara....strangers keep coming up to me and telling me how beautiful she is and what a friendly baby! how old is she...oh look at all that hair...etc etc.
But we are lucky as our friends sont have children so thats not a problem, but if it were me I would say ...oh yah just as beautiful as Casey!! or yah we are very lucky that our girls are so beautiful, boys wont know who to pick!!...you know what I am getting at?

Hannah was a truly hideous baby. Well, looking back on it she was. Now she's cute! So there is hope for your friend's child yet It's hard hanging out with the beautiful people.

I think Roksana has the right idea if you really think it is bothering your friend mkae comment's that draw attention to both babies. Or don't be rude to the people, but just say oh thank's and leave it at that. Alan attreact's the same kind of attention I thnk it is jsut some babies are more friendly and make eye contact more with other people I don't think its the look of the child as much a the personality. You are a good friend to notice this sort of thng and if you need to chat to your friend about it and find out if it really does bother her.

I guess I just find it rather embarrassing because Casey is such a beautiful baby inside and out. I do enjoy people complementing my bubbah but to just barely acknowledge, or give a vague compliment to another baby that is "right there" is just rudeness.

I thought everyone says it about all babies but our trouble is we get "oh what a beautiful girl" even when Jack is always in blue. Sorry a bit OT I have no real help but do you notice how the sort of funny looking kids turn into the most beautiful adults.

I can kind of relate coz everywhere the fat gremlins go they get attention. To the point where I feel like making a sign for the pram that says "YES we are twins, YES we are girls, YES we are identical and YES we are big for our age!". But poor Maya gets pretty much ignored. So I always make sure to point out what a good big sister she is and how helpful she is so she doesn't feel left out. Makes the other person feel stink for ignoring her too

We get the same when we go out with my friend's baby. Caitlin hasn't reached that "stanger danger" stage yet so is all smiles and "chit chats" to anyone. The other baby just screams if a face she doesn't know comes within 10 metres of her! LOL (oops I shouldn't really laugh ).
I know you feel for your friend, but there's not really much you personally can do about it, other than not go out together Yes it's rude of people to gush over one baby and not the other - but hey, some people are just RUDE and never consider other people's feeling
I personally would never go up to a total stranger in the street and gush over their kid I just think it's a bit random, especially when they grab her thighs and comment on their size! I have considered doing it back to their but I might get arrested for indecent assault

We get a lot of attention with taine, and Jake is virtually ignored! Found it really bad when we went to the Dannevirke Fantasy cave actually (sorry for not calling in Aimee - bit of a rush visit!). I'm not sure about what to do about it either to tell the truth. jake doesn't care - yet!

Liz is it cause he is 2? I am really noticing it with Alan now too people chat to Mikey, but not Laan I think it has a liittle to do with the age maybe? not aure or people jsut seem more drawn to babies rather then toddler's.

I think that Deb is right! it has some thing to do with the age!
I always notice little kiddies when I am up and about and not so much the more grown up kiddies! But would def notice your cute boys Liz!

anyway back to topic, caitlyn still gets the occasional "arent u stunning?" etc etc cos she is rather beautiful, very exotic looking and anyway she makes sure people notice her cos shes a showoff, but they dont comment as much as they used to now that shes older, if im with my friend whos daughters 10months, she'll get commented on rather than caitlyn.
But when caitlyn was little sometimes i might be with a mate that had a kid her age and caitlyn would get commentd on but not the other child or vice versa, then i realised that whats beautiful to someone mightnt be as lovely to someone else (not that babies should be treated like objects)
and also id never ever comment on one baby and not the other but theres two types in this world, those who think every child is beautiful on the outside and those who think there are some really ugly babies...im one of those,

I think all babies are cute...somemight not be as cute but they are all cute! I live babies, cant get enough of them!
I had a friend who has a 4 year old now, but when she was born she was really dark and not sooo cute! I always told her mum that she is very cute and one day she will be beautiful (she didnt beleiev me). Today tho she is still drk, is just gorgeous...and such a little miss too. On the other hand I was a cute baby and yet look at me know....
