I have noticed that our MIL's are not always our favorite person and so I wanted to start up a yay for MIL's thread    I may be the only one but I have a wonderful MIL. Yeah sure she may put here foot in her mouth sometimes but I know she is only trying to help out and pass down her advise in love. So anyone have a wonderful story to share?

I love my ILs. Just last week I went and stayed with them in TGA while DH stayed up here. It was great, they took Harper on lots of walks and I got heaps of rest. MIL had a stack of magazines waiting for me when I got there and some biscuits and each morning they came in swapped a cup of tea for a grandchild. I miss them now.

Good for you Heather, what a nice idea!

I have to say my MIL is wonderful too. She thinks I'm a bit of a hippie still BFing JJ but that's cos she didn't BF any of her three due to inverted nipples, and she is supportive despite the thinking I'm mental She is one of my biggest cheerleaders for my use of cloth nappies and I know she's said behind my back what a great mum I am which gives me warm fuzzies

When JJ was born and whisked off to SCBU in a different hospital and we were separated for a night, I was amazed that instead of going to visit their new grandson my ILs came to visit little old me. And they brought lots of thoughtful things with them, a wheatbag, a ring cushion for me to sit on , little snacks for me, a chilly bin full of meals for the freezer for DH to take home...

I suppose it helps our relationship though that we only see the ILs every couple of months

I also have a great mother in law! Clara got a lovely book in the mail from her last week, and a few months ago she sent me a card and a little gift saying what a great job I was doing as a mother (I love it when I get thoughtful surprises like that!) I also love that she is so hands on - she'll spend so much time playing with Clara, which my mum seldom does. And even though they're 6+ hours away they're always coming down here, for a grandchild's recital or special birthday party or something.

OK, of course she has her faults, she does like to organise (comes from having 7 sons I guess), I am pleased they live in another city, and yes she's had a few foot in her mouth incidents, with her 'helpful' advice - but I am very lucky.

Awww what a great thread!

And what nice ILs you have weegee!

My MIL has been known to drive me a bit mental but all the same I her to bits. When Callum was looking like arriving early we discussed bringing her out here if I had a c-section because both DH and I agreed she would be the best help we could ask for. As it turned out we didn't need her then but when we were really struggling around the 3 month mark she changed her flights and came over 3 weeks earlier than originally planned just to help us out.

The first day I was going to take her out for lunch but as we walked out the gate she told me she would take Callum for a walk while I went for a swim or just had a nap ... they were gone 2 hours! And that night she babysat so DH and I could have our first meal alone together since C was born.

Of course she can put her foot in it every once in a while, but she ALWAYS means well and will do anything to help us.

My MIL drives me completely nuts sometimes but I still love her!

When her DH died last year she moved into our granny flat so we see a lot of her.  She often hangs my washing out for me and even more often brings it again and folds it.  She always does my ironing.  She has recently started popping up in the evenings to shower my 3yo while I bath the baby which means once the baby is in bed I have 30 mins of quality time with DD.  If she's upstairs and I'm busy with the children she'll go and make me a cup of tea and tidy up my kitchen.  She's constantly asking if there's things she can help with.

The best thing she ever did though was give birth to and raise the most wonderful man in the world.

My ILs live in the UK so we only see them once a year when they come and stay for a few weeks at a time.

Each time they come, they bring vast amounts of presents and clothes for DS, he is a very well dressed little boy!

They have sent us a large chunk of money to invest on their behalf (was offered as a loan towards buying this house but we didn't need it). Interest rates in the UK are virtually zero, so it is sitting in a high interest account here for them. We borrowed $4k to pay for installing a ventilation system, and have been emailing them to arrange a repayment structure.

This morning I got an email from them saying they would just wipe the debt as our Christmas present! Not sure if we will accept yet, but what an amazing offer.

My MIL is a legend, she has Lachie every second weekend, which he loves, they love and it gives us some good quality time with Tessa. She makes meals for the freezer when we are busy on the farm and paints and wallpapers. A very hands on Nana, and often tells people I am a great mum - so nice. She does not have any daughters so I am it! When I go there with thr kids I get a cup of tea and a pile of mags and get told to put my feet up - fantastic.
She talks HEAPS and occasionally I tell her that I don't agree and this is how we are doing it and generally she takes it on board - so I am really lucky, and same as you Jo I am most greatful to her for raising a wonderful son who is a lovely husband and Dad

aww your MIL's sound wonderful!!

Mrs Mojo I to am very grateful for the wonderful son she raised.

Mine is pretty much the same as yours. Does all she can to help plus she truly is wonderful at how she has accepted me into the family. It's funny cos we are more like friends and a few times over the years I have been a shoulder for her to cry on and she would be the same for me if I ever needed it. My FIL is pretty wonderful too (they are a package cos for as long as I have know them they don't do anything apart kinda sweet if you ask me). They are always offering to help out and have just uprooted themselves to be closer to the family which is wonderful. I don't know how she managed sometimes to raise 4 kids on her own most of the time (FIL was a fisherman so away a lot) but boy did she do a great job with my man

My MIL is lovely. She has made a continuous effort not to be one of those horrid MIL's. She gives us her opinions but never forces them upon us or expects us to follow them.

She's great with Daniel, she takes him at least 2 weekends a month and they do all sorts of cool stuff with him and buys him clothes all the time, she loves doing that.

She has also offered to pay for him to go to montessori because we like it and we can't afford to send him there so she said she will pay happily.

My MIL is awesome too! She's just finished resewing curtains for us so they fit our new place (yay no more venetian blinds) and she is constantly knitting jumpers for Rowan so we don't have to worry at all about warm clothes.

She's awesome with Rowan too even though I worry sometimes she's running herself ragged (she's in her 70's) they both have a blast and Rowan 's her Nana.

And even though they're both retired on a fixed income and not well off ,every now and then she sneaks DH some $$ to help us out (and we've certainly never asked)

Aww these stories are wonderful.

I don't have much experience with having a nice MIL as the other one was horrid and in turn raised a horrid son..

BUT, my DP's mother who lives in Auckland is really really lovely and I am looking forward to being her daughter in law.   She doesn't interfere and isn't overbearing.   She always asks how I am and is never rude to me.

Last time we went to visit them in Auckland, DP's father made a speech welcoming me into their family and even though it was a shock for them at first (meeting and falling pregnant to their son after one week), they look forward to having their first grandchild and getting to know me and if Dan is happy then they are happy too.   I didn't know what to say! It was lovely.

I have to admit my MIL isn't too bad. Sometimes I think shes a lot less scary than my own mother and is so good with her granddaughters.

I'm yet to see what my MIL is like once she's a grandma but so far the signs are good.
She rings the morning before we go for dinner and offers to cook absolutely anything that I feel like, no matter how weird the craving. And she bought me some stunning black pearl earrings to "thank me" for getting pregnant with her grandchild.
