Topic: Day sleeping Posted: 10 August 2007 at 12:32pm |
Well after Jack relied on feeding to go to sleep I made sure that wouldn't happen with Caprece so now she relies on rocking to go to sleep
She sleeps fine during the night but the daytime is a joke. I put her in her bed awake all wrapped up with dummy and music then she cries so I go in there and they only way to get her to sleep is by shaking her bed. If I stop before shes asleep she just starts crying. But if I stop while shes asleep she wakes up after about 30 mins max. She then thinks she needs a feed as well so she now is snacker who feeds every 1-2 hours during the day.
So how do I get her to go to sleep on her own without leaving her to cry (which I really doubt would work anyway)?

Just wondering if she gives you tired signs before you put her to bed? Might be a stupid question, but if I put Sam to bed during the day without seeing a tired sign there is no way she is sleeping. She will lie there looking at the ceiling or spit out her dummy and cry. I now don't put her in bed until she yawns or rubs her eyes first.
Also with the feeding, Sam went through that same thing. Everytime she woke up she thought it was time to eat. It wore off a few weeks ago though and now she only eats when she is hungry. I can tell when she is because she starts sticking her tongue out a lot

I have a similar problem Rach, if you find something that works please tell me!!! hehe
Daniel will be yawning, rubbing his eyes, tired little boy, hes fed and everything is fine but wont go to sleep during the day for longer than about 45mine without me. I've tried letting him cry it out, doesn't work at all.
Its exhausting!

but a 45 min sleep during day is better than none i learnt...and eventually it is those45 min sleeps that get longer.
our sign is rubbing eyes or thumb stuck in mouth with planitve look....she might cry once put down a couple of secs but then KOs out.
I also got a mobile and that made a world of difference...she loves oceans but that mobile is what she watches to go off to sleep. by the time it finishes she is TKO!

A mobile makes things worse in our house. He is too nosey and will just look and listen and wake himself up if its on by getting all excited over it.

I did at a stage rock Rhyley to go to sleep by himself. i would rock then stop - rock if cried too much and so on.. would pause then start again. Until the pauses got longer and then not at all (meaning no rocking) I think its easier than CIO method which I think at 1 month is too young to let CIO. and your not getting them use to being held to sleep. It will pass and she will learn to not be rocked just make sure you are pausing not continueously rocking till she goes to sleep.

Brenna was always a 45 min day sleeper (once she finally went to sleep!) I tried all sorts of things... in the end I used controlled crying (plunket line talked me through it). It was hard at the time but eventually worked for getting her to sleep, but not for getting past 45 mins.
Another thing they suggested was at about 40 mins to creep into her room and sit down beside the cot and reach through the bars and gently pat her when she stirred. This worked for get her sleeping for longer, but it took up so much of my time!! (about 20 minutes each time) I kept it up for about a week, but eventually just resigned myself to the fact that she would only ever do 45 mins...but since about 8 months, she has started doing 1 1/2 hours fairly regularly during the day - woo hoo!!
I found plunket line really helpful with lots of different strategies

I'm in the same boat. Generally she is as good as gold at night, but during the day she just cries every time I try to put her to sleep (after I have seen her tired signs). I have heard that this is fairly typically of a reflux baby - good sleepers at night, terrible during the day.
Any suggestions greatfully received!

Maya was a 40 minutes at a time day sleeper and nothing I could do would change it. She was happy when she woke up tho, and would be up for a couple of hours quite happily.
The gremlins were 40 minute at a time day sleepers but they woke up grouchy and would only stay up less than an hour before they lost the plot. I talked to Louise and the Sleep Store, and read an article she wrote called Daytime Slep Solutions for Older Babies and Toddlers and she has some great ideas that work even for quite small babies. I started using their sleepsacks during the day (I had only been using them at night), and closing their curtains so the room was darker and all of a sudden they started sleeping up to two hours at a time. Louise also talks about 45 minutes being the length of each sleep cycle so it's not uncommon for babies to wake and grizzle or rustle around this time and then resettle, the important thing is whether or not they are able to settle themselves. A great article, well worth reading, worked for us! I now get 2 x 2 hour naps out of the gremlins during the day plus 12+ hours at night, and believe me, they are not naturally good sleepers!

good point about making the room darker emma. I always close the curtains with rhyley during the day as he wouldn't go to sleep with them open. I do leave just a little bit of light coming thru so its slighty lighter than night. Rhyley is a good sleeper during the day (and now good at night)

I always used to have their curtains open during the day to help them distinguish between night and day but I guess now they have an established bed time routine which tells them it's nighttime, and the darker room during the day is less distracting for them.
