We had Andrew in the forward facing carseat at 9 months. The main reason was he was too big for the insert when the seat was to be rear facing and he was 9kgs at that stage (which was the weight on the instructions to be forward facing) and had very good control of his head.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
According to my Plunket nurse children should not be forward facing for the first year of their lives. Unfortunately (her words) it is not law though and generally it is around the 9kg mark that they can face forward.
Plunket are currently lobbying to get a law change as we are behind the rest of the world with this...
In saying all of that I am in no hurry to face Olivia forward but if she is ready before 1 year old to face forward then I have no problems at all doing it.
its 9 or 12 Kg depending on your car seat (safe n sounds are 12kg) or 12 month's which ever come's first. that is waht we were told Alan was 11 Month's when we turned him forward facing.
I turned Kiya around at 8 months, at that time as long as they were over 9kg and had good control of their heads my plunket nurse said it was fine.
We turned Josiah around at 11 months, he was just under 9kg but really bored facing backwards. As soon as we turned him around, he started loving going on car trips again.
