Topic: BLOCKING INTERNET SITE HELP PLEASE Posted: 06 January 2007 at 9:59pm |
Ok, there have been various "problems" with the use of my computer and my teeneage stepson, and many angry fights between myself and his father about his use of the internet. I have asked REPEATEDLY for him not to use BEBO as I am not comfortable with his use of it, and what teenagers get up to on here. Now, I am very openminded about eveything, but I feel, that this is one site I think is inappropriately getting used, and if his mother allows him to use it in her home, fine, but I do not want him using it here FULL STOP, as we have had some problems arising with the meeting of girls off here...(another long long story) Anyhow, the computer is now inthe lounge, so we are able to moniter his use of MSN etc, but if I'm not inthe room, his father basically dosne't really care. So I want to block the site so he can't access it at all, without blocking other sites or applying net nanny etc. please help me out here computer geniuses.! TIA.

if all else fails can you contact the site administrators and ask them to block you given there is a minor accessing the site - and you dont need to tell them how old he is....worth a try?

will try to explain how to do it hubby here to help.
Start->control panel->internet option->content, in Content advisor click "Enable" it will ask you to enter a new password.. enter a new password and don't forget it... (its very trickey to find it again). this will open up a new bit with an RSACi rating controler :), click on approved sites then enter the website address and click on the Never Button.. that way unless they download a different browser ie firefox the site you have entered in theory should not be accessed.
Hope that help's hubby wrotethe instruction's. Sorry its hard to explain in typing.

My friends teenage daughter was abusing the use of bebo and my friend band her from that particular site! There really should be more criteria for bebo so the youngeys dont get in to it!
Wev had my cousins 13 yr old (going on 30!!! ) daughter staying with us and boy has she pushed her luck and the internet is one of those things! at first we unplugged the net so she couldnt use it anymore but then she started going into our private documents and changing things on the computer which caused it to freeze!!! so now we have put a password on the computer altogether so its a no-go zone!
GGGRRR glad i have a few more years yet till the terrible teens!!!

My 12 year old niece has just been banned from the computer for life after her third strike. Some of the things she was looking at were enough to make me blush and that doesn't happen very often.

Well, the texts are bad enough, I don't even know if he knows what half of it means, although they grow up so quick, I would imagine so. Thanks, Deb, instructions very clear will do it before he is back with us.
The thing that scares me so much about the whole BEBO thing, is that the kids TOTALLY put themselves out there, with ALL their information, phone numbers etc, and that is just scary. Also, the teenage girls are soooo provocative. The words jail bait often spring to mind. now, I'm not saying there is ever EVER any excuse for sexual assalt, but you can see how some of these girls get themselves into situations beyond their control, especailly with older guys. So so scary.

My parents raise my neice and she is on that site. Problem is they are so completely computer illiterate they have no idea what she can and does get up to. She is a good girl but still.... I always keep an eye on her site and her friends sites, some is just talk and you can tell my niece is pretty nieve which is a worry in itself cos someone can take advantage. Plus I know what i was up to at her age and she better bloody well not be doing the same!

Good on you Annie - hope its sorted now.
Re the Bebo thing, I have been looking at my 15 yr old SIL's site and OMG the things she says she has done are terrible. On the tame side, there are photos from when all her mates rented a hotel room and had a party. Have been thinking about this for a while and dont know whether to show DH all of it... She also has pictures of everyone in the family (incl grandparents) on her site which I dont think they'd be very comfortable with.

To be honest, I would. After all, it is on the site for all and sundry to see, so whos to say he didn't just "stumble" on it. I understand it might upset him, but she is still a minor, and while she might be keen on the whole world seeing her and her mates acting like... well, whatever it is that 15 year old girls act like (I ws going to say knob end, but that really only describes stupid teen boys.. ) I am sure that the rest of the family wouldn't be that keen...

yep, me too. I just changed all the passwords as well, as when I told Rod yesterday what I had done, he told me had told stepson the password to get on the computer, which is the same one I used for the blocking bit! Now I have also just figured out how to take the thing off when we are online, so we don't have to use the password every page we visit, so that rocks! Thanks so much, Mummy22!! You ROCK!
Will keep you postd on the fallout!!!
