Ok so our girls usually have crackers and fruit for morning tea and biscuit/cake/muffin/more fruit for afternoon tea. I guess some might say that those are junk foods but for us they are an "in moderation" between-meal snack.

Takeaways is about once a month. The odd juice about the same. Fizzy even less.

Chippies and things like that are not so common but probably a couple of times a month.

They often get a lollipop a week (not from us) so I guess that all works out rather well.

Interesting thread. Maybe if I remove snacks Elle would eat dinner. She has not eaten dinner for absolutely weeks and weeks. No veg, no meat. Nothing. She flattly refuses. Maybe if I remove ALL snacks she will be forced to eat dinner. That seems so mean though...

Gremlins would waste away if it wasn't for snacks. They eat a heap of fruit so I don't mind too much if they have biscuits or crackers as well. Biscuits are usually either wine, arrowroot or malt biscuits, I buy one packet of hundreds and thousands bickies a fortnight and once they're gone they're gone.

Maya doesn't get chippies etc. in her school lunchbox, she gets those Rice Wheel thingies or the mini packs of rice crackers, fruit, a sandwich, yoghurt, muffins or pikelets and sometimes one of those fruit smash pureed fruit thingies. And she buys her lunch at school on Thurs which is sushi day.

I'm not anal about junk food tho, Willie brings home chips on pay day as a treat and we have takeaways prob once a week, maybe once a fortnight.

Charlotte probably gets crisps once a week. Chocolate or lollies about once a fortnight, if that- we are quite restricted over what she can eat anyway because of her allergies. The only takeaways she can have are either fish and chips or Maccas- F&C are revolting here and Maccas are about a once a month thing.

I don't consider crackers junk food- plain baked crackers with a bit of cheese, tomato and marmite on them always go down well here.

I find if she has anything like lollies she goes absolutely nutty and is really difficult to deal with. She'll often stay up later and that means shes grumpy and over tired the next day. When the ILs are around they like to 'treat' her with lots of lollies- but considering they are bad for her teeth, bad for her health and basically mean she behaves terribly and get told off lots I think they're more of a punishment! You would think that if they care, they would want what is best for them- health wise. Its like they get a kick out of being the ones to give them something nice and treaty- buggar the consequences.

Yeah, why is that?

My mum and dad are pretty good and treat Michaela by lending DVDs and buying her books and playing with her but MIL likes to give her lollies and chips.

I think maybe for us it's because MIL loves chippies and lollies herself so she thinks of them as a treat (even though her bad health is slowly killing her and none of us would wish that on Michaela).

I think I'm a little strick on the treats.
As a treat Zoe gets rice crackers with hummus. Or if I'm extra nice mummy she'll have cottage cheese on her rice crackers. On the weekend I allow her to have one plain biscuit.
I don't allow any type of jucie, only water and milk. I know DH sneaks in a bit of watered down apple juice on Sundays.
Once a blue moon she'll have mcd chips or oven fries that I've made myself.
At daycare I think she gets milo everyday. At home I don't allow milo, I just don't think she needs it at 18mths. But I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it. One of the reasons I dont't allow many treats is I know she has milo at daycare.

Hmmm we aren't STRICT like we allow those little mini plain bickies for morning snacks but encourage fresh fruit, veg, dried fruit and things. Definately try not to reward Neosha with food though.

My inlaws are always going on to me about how hard I am on her because I dont allow sweets and chocolate and chips and crap to pass her lips but its hard enough to get food into her as it is I would rather it be something full of nutrition!!! They always say well when she is at school you wont be able to stop her blah blah blah I will still teach her good eating habits though! Gosh I walked in one morning to find my nephews having pebbles and timtams for breakfast. SHOCKING

I really dont limit stuff as badly as it sounds. I think those we have saw me at meets have seen McKayla sharing cake with me ect. But I take what she eats over a week and then a month into account and as soon as I see that we eat too much junk or she doesnt eat the healthy food I will just adjust it for a bit and have us all back on track.

I am petrified that she lands up with PCOS as well and I know I cant prevent it if she has to end up getting it but I can try and help her all I can while she is still small. And moderation is key to us.

Once again I dont think crackers are bad but I do think it was bad if she had that instead of lunch and then it affects her dinner as well and then have toast on top of that for breakfast. Just way too much "bread, cracker" type meals in one day for my liking.

My Dad learnt his lesson about giving my kids stuff without my permisson when he let Maya lick ice cream off his spoon when she was about 7 mths old. We had told him and told him that she was allergic to dairy but he just didn't get how serious it was. Within a few mins her face was covered in hives and swollen up and that was enough to give my Dad the fright of his life. Since then he's been even more anal than me about what is and isn't safe for them.

Oh yes, to be able to go back to the time when Michaela was eating gluten free so I had complete control over her diet.  Then again I hope she doesn't have coeliacs it's a pretty inconvenient disease to have to live with.

Leah has the odd cracker with marmite for morning tea, and if I have done baking she has a little bit of that, but nothing else really. She only drinks milk or water, she doesn't really like juice the odd times she has tried it so I don't bother. She eats lots of fruit, some days I think she survives only on fruit!   I don't give her anything after 3 pm so she at least has a good effort at dinner, she may not eat it all but she eats more if she has no afternoon snacks!

We try and be careful with what she has as my nephew can't have anything that has colours, additives or preservatives in so we don't really have anything in the house just in case he is here, then we know he can eat what everyone else is having.

MIL just turned up with a small bag of mcdonalds fries and gave them straight to Michaela.  So bad, firstly because this is a junkfood free house atm and secondly because Michaela's due to have dinner in 45 mins.

I confiscated them - mean mummy aye - then quickly shoved together some other bits and pieces for dinner (ham, cucumber, tomatos and cheese) and gave her a small portion of the chips, ate a couple myself and threw the rest of the bag (about 1/2) away.

I don't think I'll ever get it through to her that I don't like junkfood treats.  Why doesn't she treat her by taking her to the park?

Ah Mojo, I'm hearing ya....

My MIL is the same - will give Joshua all sorts of things when he's with her that I wouldn't. DP and I have had discussions about it and came to the decision (albeit grudgingly) that when he's with her she can give him what she thinks is ok.

In terms of junk food in our house though, it's pretty minimal. His one treat is organic apple juice iceblocks. But I do give him things like crackers, dried fruit, homemade nuggets (fish or chicken) and homemade chips quite regularly. They may be seen as treats by some. But lollies, ice cream, chocolate are never given. He doesn't even know what they are. We were out one day and a little girl (mebbe about 4) gave him a cola bottle lolly (asked me first), and he just held on to it, and looked at it lol! I had to tell him it was something he could eat!

Stick to your guns. Perhaps you need to list out for your MIL what you consider to be junk? Maybe she thinks a few fries are ok.....

The problem with that plan for us is that MIL looks after Michaela every afternoon until I get home from work and she pops up a couple of times a day 7 days per week

That's a good idea.  I obviously need to be more clear.  I've also wondered a few times in recent months if she is beginning to suffer from althzeimers or similar - sometimes she appears to be a few sammies short of a picnic and things we tell her go in one ear and out another and sometimes I feel like I'm talking to a toddler.  This is one of the reasons we invited her to move in so I should probably cut her a break.  Then again it probably has more to do with the fact it's only been 3 months since her DH died and also she's at an age where she chooses to ignore us because she knows it all now.

ETA: re-reading this it sounds like I leave my daughter every afternoon with an elderly person who suffers from dementia or something... it's really not like that at all.  She is quite capable, just occassionally annoying.

I have chosen to have Isla on a diet which a lot of people seem to think of as very restictive,..but it was recommneded by our naturapath and has greatly helped with her eczema/unsettledness/sleeping etc.
So she has no sugar and hardly anything with preservatives, cottage cheese and plain unsweetened yougurt are the only dairy products she eats, no pork or pork products at all,and we also dont allow a few other things.
She has crackers daily, either rice crackers or those healtheries kids packs, or mealmates or cruskits as snacks. But nothing else at all that is not homemade. I make her own biscuits and cakes which I take to mainly music and she has a supply in the freezer at daycare so she can have those instead of regular cake when its someones birthday. She probably has those homemade buicuits or cake about 3 times a week.
About once a fortnight at in-laws she has plain chips. She very very seldom has watered down juice and never has had fizzy.
