Topic: Feeding question Posted: 09 August 2007 at 9:39am |
Righto, so I'm trying to fix Daniels horrible sleeping during the day and part of this means I have to get him properly into the routine of feed/play/sleep. (been chatting to Louise from the Sleep Store)
My issue is that he will have one side when he wakes up then once he's done with that side (he pulls off and won't go back on even if there is some milk left) he refuses to take the other side so that fine, must be full.. then we have our play time until I see him yawn for the first time, so we start winding down etc for sleep. Then he decides he's hungry again! So his routine is feed/play/feed/sleep.
How can I cut that 2nd feed out? It's not just a snack either, it's quite a big feed. I just don't want him to associate feeding with sleeping. But I also can't figure out how get him to feed in one stint rather than in 2. I've tried feeding him again a little while after he's taken himself off the first boob but he's just not interested.

That sounds exactly like what Benjy used to do.
My Plunket nurse recommended that I start taking him off mid-feed for a burp and then changing sides once he'd done the burp. Just to get him into the habit of stopping and changing sides.
I found though, because he was still hungry he got REALLY worked up when I tried to sit him up and burp him so I cut that bit out and would just take him off, flip him over and put him on the other side.
After a couple of days of doing this at every feed, he did start feeding longer on each side. I also had to introduce a bit of patting and shushing when I put him down without the boob though.

Hannah used to do that and it settled down after she was about 6 months old. As far as I know it's pretty normal for under 4mos or even later. Kryssi still does it now. As the baby gets older you can just pull them off just before they nod off so that they still self-settle. If it's a decent feed, I stay with it cause I figure the baby needs it.
Although I have no idea how contrary that advice might be to Louise's

Louise advised to kick the feeding before sleep before 4 months.. the longer I let it continue the harder it's going to be to stop it.

i suppose it would depend tho on wether you are feeding till he falls asleep and putting him to bed or wether as busymum said he is still slightly awake when you put him down. if that is the case then i wouldnt bother trying to get rid of it.
does he burp after hes finished the one side?

both my girls did that, and then all of a sudden they just started staying awake after a feed..... i think if he is DEPENDING on it to get to sleep, then it becomes a problem. but if he feeds till sleepy, or wakes up when you take him off the breast, and then goes back to sleep then it should be fine to continue along that way. unfortunately breastfeeding isnt as regimented as bottle, you have to let your baby decide how much he needs.

Cool question and advice - lily does the same. But I also find that if I don't do it this way - feed one side, change/play, feed other side, then she will not play but get tired so she has to sleep, and we end up having too much day sleep (and not enough at night!)
I do try to ensure that most of her day sleeps she goes to sleep herself, so I guess i am doing something right!

I remember Jack doing that and so we just stopped giving him the second side and just put him to sleep cos I found when Jack was tired he wanted to suck but not always for food but would have food if it was offered. It didn't take long for him to realise if he needed food he had to have both sides first. I don't really see the problem with it if he really wants the second feed as long as you don't put him down asleep.
