My little man has a bit of a tummy bug and has now gone on a nursing strike - he hasn't accepted nursing from me since 5pm on Wednesday. He has now started drinking EBM from a bottle (which is something he refused to do previously) as well as extra water but I am completely freaked out (and more than just a little bit sad) that he might not accept me again.
Just after a little reassurance from you lovely ladies that there is nothing to worry about! Also any advice or tricks for getting him to go back to BF.

oh no - hugs big time. It can feel really horrid when they do that. He's getting all he needs from the EBM am sure. Try the Kelly Mom website it has some great info. What worked for me was standing and walking around with Bubs latched on. Don't know why this worked but it did. After a couple of days she was all go again.

This might seem a strange idea but have you tried taking him for a car ride? Lily went on a few nursing strikes last week (turns out she had a sore tummy) and we got in the car to go to the doctors and she decided she would feed when we got there *sigh*
Every time I offered her the breast she'd scream, cry, etc and pull away.

Yeah definately check out the kellymom website, she has some great advice. I also found that walking around helped, as did hoping into bed and just staying there for most of the day skin to skin, although that might not work for you with an older bub. Another suggestion was to hope in the bath together. Good luck, I hope you get out the other side of it |

If you really want to push through the nursing strike, I'd suggest switching from a bottle to a sipper cup or even just a regular cup - that way his latch won't become affected, and he is less likely to end up preferring the bottle as it is less work for him to drink from.
We had a nursing strike not too long ago, and boy was it stressful - but we made it through in the end! I offered it as often as DD2 would let me but didn't force the issue, made sure I kept my own fluids up and offered her a little bit of water, and kept offering her solids as usual too. I was lucky that it lasted only 24 hours, but I was prepared to work through it for as long as would have been necessary.

We had one for a couple of days at about 8 weeks and I ended up expressing and bottle feeding each feed and then he just came right after 2 days.
I had rung Plunketline and they suggested two things - to dreamfeed and to hop into the bath together and try it that way.

Thanks again everyone for the advice!
Went to the drs to double check there wasn't anything funky going on and its just a regular tummy bug (which it is)
I really want him to go back to BF so will be trying whatever I can! (although the walking one didn't really work out so far - he is 10kgs and got a bit awkward to hold)

I read somewhere a little marmite on your nipple is a good trick - never tried it myself - but worth a crack

lol - that would be a sight!!
Well we've managed to have one night feed from the boy in the wee hours this morning - although now he is up and awake with the world I am back to being 'evil nipple monster'! Oh well its a start and at least he's had one decent feed today.
