   Hi Everyone,
Basic q from a first time mum here.

How many scans are you supposed to have and at what point if everything appears to be normal?

Some people told me 4 and another said 2.

I know I get a 12 weeks and a 20 week. Are there any others?

 Cheers

 Dana

I got the 2 mentioned above as well as a dating scan at 9 weeks and then we also paid for a 3D scan at 30 weeks (that wasn't for any medical reason, just to be nosey)

Usually there is only the two scans unless they need extras for numerous reasons ie, complications, dating scans, bleeding etc
The first one is about 12 weeks for the nuchal testing. You don't have to have this one if you don't want to but majority of people do.
The second one is about 20 weeks which is an anatomy scan.
I also had a third when I was overdue to check bubs was ok and do a growth scan.
Good luck with your pregnancy Dana!

I had my first at 20weeks where they checked dates and did the anatomy as well and only cos they couldn't get a good look at bubs' face we got another one at 24weeks to try again (Was so glad as seeing bubs was sooo awesome the first time!). You also get more if they're concerned about something or need to check positioning pre-birth.

My doc got me an early scan at 10 weeks (just cause I wanted one and he likes me hehe) but that isn't normal.
If I hadn't had that, my first and only one would have been at 20weeks.

I had a couple after that but that was just because of the position of the placenta.

So if I had been patient and no placenta issues I would have only had 1

I just wanted to see my baby so got as many scans as I could
- 6 week dating scan (just a blob)
 - 12 week nuchal fold scan (fully recognisable though its head seemed unnaturally big!)
 - 18 week anatomy scan (could see all the internal organs and proportions were more normal)
 - 23 scan cos they'd done such a crappy job of the 18 week scan that I got a free repeat one!

I am the scan queen lol!
With Maya I had 4 - at 8 weeks to check my kidneys, nuchal scan at 12 weeks, anatomy at 20 weeks and growth/presentation scan at 36 weeks.

With the gremlins I had more than 17 scans all up - at 5, 6 and 9 to assess viability, then the NT at 12 weeks, then growth scans every fortnight until they were born at 36 weeks with a couple of extras in there when I had a few complications.

This time I had a dating scan (and to rule out twins again!) at 6 weeks, scan for bleeding at 8 weeks, nuchal scan at 12 weeks, scan for yet more bleeding at 14 weeks, anatomy at 20, scan coz I had strange abdo pain at 30 weeks, scan to check baby's kidneys at 32 weeks and a growth/presentation scan at 36 weeks.

Needless to say I have become pretty good at reading ultrasound pics!

It's usually 1-2 (depending on where you live)
I had quite a few (def not as bad as Emma though!):
7 weeks (dating) - through specialist
10 weeks (just checking) - through specialist
11 weeks - NT - baby wrong position
12 weeks - NT - baby wrong position
13 weeks - NT - baby wrong position, gave up
 20 weeks - anatomy
 27 weeks - growth
28 weeks - detailed heart scan
 34 weeks - growth (IUGR)
 36 weeks - growth (IUGR)
38 weeks - growth (no longer IUGR)
 38 weeks - detailed heart (again!) x3
39 weeks - detailed heart, cleared
 40 weeks - growth (normal)

Wow, that's 14! Cool! (well it wasn't at the time! It was very scary) If you do have to have growth or heart scans, the good thing is is that you pay once and then all the repeats should be free. It can get very expensive.

My doctor had no problems giving me a referral for an early scan....I mean in the end its no skin off their nose.
And the place I went to are free under 12 weeks no matter how many times you go. I went 3 times this month before I had to have a d&c.
Next time I'll ask for another early one...which I'm sure doctor won't mind as I've now had 3 m/c in a row.

I had my first at 18 weeks ( six years ago that seemed to be the norm, rather than 20 weeks)
Had another at 36 weeks, only reason i did tho was i was admitted to hospital with Gastro and whinged so much about having another scan (wanted to see the sex) that they did it for their own sanity me thinks!

First pregnancy (I think it was pretty standard) was one at 12wks - nuchal scan and the anatomy scan at 18wks (or 20wks for some people).
This pregnancy so far, Ive had one at:
8wks - growth scan and eliminating previous mc
 12wks - nuchal
 18wks - anatomy
 24wks - growth
 28wks - growth
 31wks - growth.........

......and still counting. Thankgoodness that after your first 3 scans, the rest are free.

Hi there, I was always asked when ever I called to enqire about LMC care whether i had my pregnancy confirmed with a scan, so I think it depends on who you see but I know about the 12-14 week Nuchal and then 20 week one.
Had my dating scan today, all good for 17 February Yay!!!
