Topic: Diva or Luna Cup - Girly Topic (TMI) Posted: 21 May 2009 at 5:39pm |
Hi there- this is a girly topic so all guys- you've had a fair warning!
Just had baby in January and have looked into getting one of those menstrual cups b/c I felt like the tampons were drying everything up there IYKWIM plus there's the cost and the environmental benefits.
Just wanted to hear what you thought about the products (if you've used them before or are using them now) and what tips you have in using them. Is it painful? Have you ever 'spilled'? What brand did you like? Cleaning-difficult? Easy to use? etc. etc.
You can use other words to spare the embarrassment if need be.

I have a mooncup and its awesome!
Its not painful in fact I often forget I've even got it in,
I've never spilt (though I'm always sitting on the loo anyway so might be easier that way?),
I run it under the tap when I empty it (makes it easier to pop back in when its wet too but if I'm out I can just give it a wipe with toilet paper and back in so very versatile) and put it in boiling water when my AF finishes to sterilise it so easy as to clean,
it comes with a little cotton bag so easy to store.
I've found I've had no cramping (except this cycle which was weird anyway) since I started using it and those dry probs disappeared too
I also love the fact I don't have to remember to take 'spares' or worry about disposal (like when you're at someone elses house!), and no more realising at 10pm when AF arrives that you don't have any sanitary things and having to duck down to the store and its the night before payday so you're broke!!
Anyway thats my opinion

Ok, just a question. How do you rinse it when in a public toilet??
Sounds interesting.

Yeah or at work? Plus I am terrible at going away on holiday and forgetting to take tampons with me hahaha.
Def would be interested in investigating tho....where do you get them from and how much?

I've used a diva cup for the last year, and had no problems wiht it. I do the same as Babe, just rinse it under the tap or if I'm out and can't do it that for some reason i ususlly have a bottle of water in my bag and just squirt that on it over the loo. Not painful, bit fiddly til you get used to it that's all
And so must cheaper than the money i used to spend on sanitary prducts every month.
You can get them from Greenbeans, commonsense organics in Wellington sell them and I got mine from Foxybots.
I will try and find a link for a good site for comparing them
Also several threads on here already

I really like the coloured ones. Just as a matter of interest How often would you need to empty and how would you know. Is it just a practise/know you body thing??

Thanks for the input. Was a bit hesitant to fork over the $ when I'm not sure if it'll work and plus want to give it a go when I'm at home these days so that way I won't spaz out if I can't get it right in just 2 mins. Wouldn't wanna be outta the house stuck in a bathroom with it not sitting right doing yoga poses to get it out! lol
Was sure I would've read something bout it before in these forums but there is no way to search for it! Or is there? Would be nice to just enter in a Google OhBaby search!
good comparison pics on that one link, redbedrock. thanks!

You can use a tissue to give them a wipe I've done that when out and about.
Sarahbetha I empty mine in the morning and at night but I have a light cycle. I'd check it every 3-4 hours when you're first figuring it out if you have a heavier cycle.
I find it really easy to 'extract' when I'm sitting on the loo and I just stand up with a foot on the toilet to put it back. No great shakes its pretty much the same as a tampon. It doesn't go as far in as a tampon so easy to reach. No funny yoga poses trying to get sorted
The other great thing is if you know AF is due just pop it up there and you're good to go - no worrying about spotting or mess when you're out and about.

Not that I need it yet, but I just went through this process and found the following site invaluable:
http://menstrualcups.wordpress.com/tag/ratings/
She has FAQ too:

Daizy, I used to think it was gross cos I thought you had to change it as often as a tampon - but like Babe said, unless you have very heavy flow, you don't - you can go 8 hours. Awesome!

I think mine is a femmecup or something, the cheapest one I could find anyway lol. I love it, its really easy to get up there but it did take me a few cycles to get used to it. Like everyone else i rinse it out under the tap or with toilet paper. Another option is to carry a drink bottle and use the water in that to wash it out.

Sabrina there were a few places suggested in an earlier post by Redbedrock. Mostly you get them on the net. Foxybots is a good place to look or Greenbeans.
They tended to be round the $60 inc p&p when I was looking.
