Topic: Using Microwave to Heat     Posted: 22 March 2007 at 9:21pm |

I am using the microwave to heat all my babies bottles and solids. He is six months old. Does anyone know the reasons why microwaves aren't used in daycares apart from the obvious hot spots debate.

No idea. Maya's daycare used a microwave. I do know that you can't use a microwave to reheat breastmilk as it destroys the proteins.

The only reasoning I am aware of is as you have already mentioned, re: hot spots. I just make extra sure the bottle is evenly shaken, and usually leave it to stand for a little while too. I usually also make sure her solids are well stirred, and blow on the food if need be.

I would only use it to heat water rather than the formula, it can actually cook the formula more than anything I noticed Olivia knows the difference between heated formula and heated water with formula added... so there you go!

I use it if I'm in a real hurry for a bottle. Usually just heat the 200ml for 20 secs (800 watts), then add the formula. The formula does mix easier, and for such a short burst of heat, the bottle can be well shaken and used straight away - never had a problem.

I use it to heat bottles and baby food too. I also would only heat water - more because if I overheated it, it was easy to just tip out a bit and add cooler water and not muck up the amount in the bottle!

It's the hot spots like you said, and the way that microwaving strips foods of some of their nutrients more than other methods of heating do.  I warm Ella's solids in the microwave though -it's more of a problem if you are cooking food in it rather than just slightly warming it (and I just do it to take the fridge chill off her food).

Mya loves everything cold, even the formula, so hardly bother heating things up. But i use the microwave when i do and weve had no problems!
