Topic: Im starting to feel ripped off..     Posted: 15 November 2007 at 9:07am |

Well not ripped off as such but it started from the birth of kylah, she was born at 10.52pm and stopped breathing at 10min old..she had to go on oxygen and noone could tell me why.. i thought MW was supposed to clear airways? (water birth) anyway, moved to another room at 2am and thats it left on my own untill 10am when i had to leave at 11am and there was nowhere to transfer to as EVERYWHERE was full.. i got shown once how to b/f, didnt get told or talked to at all after that and had to go home at 11am, also got told by MW not to bother her with b/f issues as i should have asked the hospital!! Now kylah is 13 weeks old, iv seen plunket once after my appointment got cancelled 3 times and that was the 23rd oct. I was supposed to see them again this week but they have cancelled again!
i just feel like iv been ripped off! i just want to know what she weighs, that she is gaining good weight, as ppl keep telling me shes tiny!

 What can i do?

Firstly take her to your gp, you are suppose to see the doc for 3 month check anyway and they will weigh her there. And as far as I'm concerned I would take a docs opinion/advice over plunket any day.
Then if I was you I would lodge a formal complaint to the CDHB, I would write to my MP and if the midwife wasn't one supplied through the hospital I would find out who she is accountable to and make another complaint there as well.
I think you should feel ripped off, and I think you should get pissed off about it and make some people take accountability for their actions (or should I say lack of).
Oh an definately give plunket a rark up cos that is totally unacceptable to keep cancelling on you.

Man I'm totally pissed off for you now.

OMG thats shocking! I would not put up with that treatment from my midwife grrr!!! I second what cuppatea said, that is completely unacceptable behaviour from midwife and plunket and you should definitely complain.

Take Kylah to your GP to get her checked out as you seem concerned about her size etc. Also remember you don't have to use plunket as a well child provider, you can use your gp if you wish and there are others though can't think of who off the top of my head.
 Ooohhh ggggrrrrr
Definitely makes me even more grateful for my midwife now.

I agree with cuppatea. Go see your GP first to set your mind at rest, and then get onto the plunket etc.

In fact, Kandice, I think you can complain directly about your midwife to the Midwifery council...you should have been sent a comments questionnare anyway, as that is how your midwife's performance is judged by the council...

Man I feel bad for you! That's such crap service!!!

Have you thought of switching to one of the Maori well child providers?? Otherwise I'd stick with your GP. They can at least weigh her etc. Otherwise have you got digital scales for yourself?

When we are wondering how much Daniel weighs, one of us jumps on our scales, then jump on again with a nakie Daniel to figure out how much he weighs. The digital scales are fairly accurate and I got my scales from briscoes for about $30

That is awful & I am completely shocked! Your midwife is there to help you not to tell you to "not bother her"! OMG complain to the midwifery council and as others have said, take your baby to your gp. Just tell them it is for a well child visit on the phone when you make the appointment.

I just wrote an email to plunket about the cancelling of every appointment and how i feel dissapointed with my experience with plunket. I have made an appointment with the doc for tomorrow, as she has to have her shots anyway. I couldnt believe she said that when she did either.. also another small thing that annoyed me when i was in labour was she told me if i wanted to listen to the radio the only station i was allowed to put on was 'the rock' even tho im a big tahu fan, especially t the time of night as its slow jams hour.. my DF got up and changed it anyway.. just a small thing but it bothered me!

Man, you were totally ripped off!  That' sshocking service, and I can't believe that your midwife and plunket both totally dropped the ball.  Lousy.  I think you can just ring at Maori service provider and ask them - explain that you're getting no service from plunket and need to transfer.

Hey, chicky, I'm sorry that things aren't going so well with you early experiences with plunkets, crap midwives etc. I also, and I'm reading between the lines a bit here, think that you yourself may be in need of a bit of a cuddle/cry/help out? You sound so sad and bewildered. Big hugs to you, Kandice, and don't forget there is lots of help out there. I hope things get better for you and your beautiful daughter really soon. xxx

But that doesn't excuse them not having seen the baby by now. I'm shocked as well.

Kandice that really sucks and I think emailing them is a good thing to do. Thats a real shame about your midwife cos she was so lovely when she delivered Jack but then again she was my back up and my midwife didn't want her to be my back up with Caprece so maybe others have had the same problem.

Definitely complain Kandice. I was just thinking the other day, if someone had laid complaints about my m/w, I wouldn't have got her (hopefully) and now I wouldn't be shafted too (long story but anyway...)

I would feel ripped off too, the birth experience is supposed to be all about mother and baby, not the m/w.

As for plunket, they may be overworked as someone said above, but to cancel 3 appointments isn't good enough. I'm glad you're going to the doctors with wee Kylah.

Good luck, I think as a first time mum you often don't know what you're supposed to expect but that is just not acceptable.
