 Topic: Second hand cot mattresses

I got an innersprung mattress included when I got my second hand cot, which is in really good condition. Am planning on investigating cleaning companies to see if they can remove all the likely nasties.. does anyone know anything about this or which companies may be good to contact?
I'm hoping the cost of this will be cheaper than buying a new mattress, but be just as effective!

We had a second hand innersprung mattress and havent had any problems at all ..
All we did was air it out 
(Oh and the cot she uses at Mum and Dads house also has a second hand mattress on it)

if it were me i would get a new one.. it's the germs that are right in the mattress that are the problem.. I didn't know there were companies that could clean them?

Companies are likely to use chemicals which I wouldn't really want in a matress.
If you really want to use it just air it out for a few months and maybe get a cover to go overtop of it

I the sids thing was to do with the release of chemicals in older/second hand mattresses? That's what those poly covers are for.
I'd get a new one personally but we all know how expensive it can be setting up for a little one.

Getting a new one is the healthiest option.
Short of that, I'd just air it for a while then cover with a Dr Sprott cover - those are about $20 from the baby factory so heaps cheaper than new mattress

Do some google work on seeing how you can clean it?
If in doubt keep it for later as having a spare could come in handy. We used our cot mattress a lot after Alia was out of her cot as a spare bed.

With all 3 of my kids they have had second hand mattresses and there were no problems at all... I don't think we even aired it out.

We have a second hand mattress with a plastic cover over and it seems to be fine. We have folded a sheet and tucked it under the mattress before putting the fitted sheet over as the plastic was quite cold

All the books I've read so far say you should get a new mattress for each child! Though that sounds a little OTT to me. I think if it looks to be in good nick, if you left it in the sun to kill any nasties and aired it out heaps, I'd probably be OK with using it. Using a cover as well sounds like a good idea.

I would think that by the time you pay for it to be cleaned it may not be much more to buy a new one??
Farmers have good specials everynow and again with 30% off nursery items so you could keep an eye out for a new one if you decide not to keep the old that is.

I've found a company called Health Protect that use a 4-stage sanitation process (uses UV treatment as one stage) suitable for mattresses and carpets, and they say its very safe for children. And apparently only charge $30 for a cot mattress!
So will be finding out more this week.

Good luck. We used a new foam mattress for DD and she was fine with that but I'm going to buy a new inner sprung one this time (i think i'm more paranoid 2nd time round!) A friend of mine got an inner sprung one from the Warehouse on special.

Issy had a second hand innersprung and this bub will have Issys bassinette and hammock (so third hand mattresses)
I would say that bub 2 will have a second hand cot and mattress too.
We just air them .. (seems to have worked so far)

yeah i'd just air it in the sun for a bit then use a cover. if you're worried about any surface stains, you could try gently spot cleaning them with a cloth dabbed in a water/white vinegar solution before putting it out in the sunlight to bleach/dry/air. When you use those covers, place a wool/cotton blanket or a large folded cotton sheet between it and your fitted sheet. Makes a nice layer for baby to lie on rather than the crunchy plastic.

I dont get the concept of the plastic covers. Surely mattress protectors do the same thing and they have a nice cushion part on the top.
Well they keep the bubs leaks from getting to the mattress so I cant see how stuff can get from the mattress to the baby.
