     Topic: 1st Fertility Spec Appt     Posted: 05 November 2007 at 1:17pm |

Hi, my husband and l have been TTC #1 for approx 9-10 months now. We are both 34. My GP has referred us to Fertility Associates Auckland. I am just wondering if anyone knows how long the waiting list is for the initial appt (public)?

 Thanks in advance, Sharon

Just a quick reply as i'm not sure how long the wait is for an initial appt. I was referred by my GP and but had a private appt as it only cost about $150, i thought it was worth it to get the ball rolling. Hopefully your wait isn't too long.

Kicker, once you went for your initial appt privately were you then able to get tests etc done with public funding? Did that get you into the public system quicker?

 Thanks, Sharon

Hi there. Not sure sorry but just wanted to send you hugs, and let you know that fertility associates is great. We saw Mary Birdsall (privately) and she was lovely. There are lots here who have been where you are now so know that you are well supported. Hope you get your appt very soon.

   Hi there,

It is my understanding that you have to pay for the initial appointment and tests and then they look at your situation and test results and compare that to a criteria for public funding. Once you have satisfied the criteria you are eligble for public funding and go on the waiting list, it is free at that stage.

It might be worth giving them a call to find out when your appt might be and hurry them up.

 Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the advice and best wishes. Will probably make a private appt in Jan if still waiting then.

   Hi tibby,

My understanding is that following referral, for a publicly funded specialist appointment, it can take 3 - 6 months.
My husband and I jumped the queue also by paying for our intial appointment ourselves, as well as DH's semen analysis. My ultrasound was included in the initial appointment, and I think it was around $175.00 all up. No more than that anyway.
Considering the waiting list for IVF and other fertility treatments is growing exponentially all the time, it may be worth jumping the queue.
And, of course, don't forget that in the scheme of things TTC 9-10 months isn't all that long so keep your chin up!

Just to let you know l have an appt for 3rd Dec at F+ (thought l was reffered to FAA but was wrong). So about a 6 week wait from refferal which l think is pretty good for the public system.

We are with fertility associates in AKLD.

The calculate your status whether or not you can get funding and how long if you have to wait for any treatment.

Length of time to get pregnant
 Age
 Hormone levels
 Smoking
 Children current or previous relationships
 Husbands infertility.

Best thing is to have a look at their website it tells you everything you need to know

Just to give you a bit of encouragement also with Mary Birdsall at Fertility Associates. Two years ago yesterday I had my first specialist appointment. We now have a crawler to show for it.

It's really worthwhile. I found that they were so professional there that far from being nervous I was made to feel completely at ease.

 Good luck with it.
