    Posted: 04 April 2007 at 1:20pm

Hi

Does anyone know which herbal teas are safe to drink during pregnancy and which ones I should avoid? I have looked on the net and cant seem to find a definitive list anywhere.

As I work from home, I tend to take 'tea breaks' during the day and am struggling to find a hot drink that I enjoy (am lactose intolerant so nothing yummy like hot chocolate!). The smell of coffee makes me ill and I have opted to be as caffeine free as possible.

Thanks

Sam

Hey - I work for Healtheries - here is our list of what herbal teas you can / shouldn't have and why :

Herbal And Fruit Teas For Mothers To Be

Herbal and Fruit Teas should be varied, especially during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Use the following teas with caution:

Healtheries Licorice Tea
Healtheries Blackcurrant Tea
These teas should be used no more than 1 cup per day. They contain licorice which causes sodium retention, and should not be taken by those with high blood pressure, fluid retention, loose bowel motions, or histories of miscarriage.

Healtheries Lemon & Ginger Tea
Healtheries Ginger Tea with Lemon Grass
These teas can be taken at one cup per day to settle digestion and nausea, more can be taken under the guidance of a health practitioner. Long term excessive amounts are not recommended.

Healtheries Wildberry Tea
This tea may contribute to constipation if used regularly due to the tannin content. Otherwise it is quite safe to be drunk regularly.

Healtheries St Johns Wort Tea with Blended Berries
Healtheries Naturally Slim Herbal Tea
These teas are not to be taken during pregnancy.

Healtheries Apricot & Mango Tea
Healtheries Exotic Fruit Tea
Healtheries Red Berry Tea
Healtheries Bedtime Tea
Healtheries Chamomile Tea
Healtheries Chamomile & Honey Tea
Healtheries Peppermint Tea
Healtheries Ginseng Tea with Blackcurrant & Vanilla
Healtheries Sleep Tea with Passionflower & Chamomile
Healtheries Ginkgo Tea with Lemon
These teas contain small amounts of some ingredients for which safety in pregnant or nursing women has not been established. It is recommended that you consume no more than one cup per day of these teas.

Healtheries Pure Green Tea
Healtheries Green Tea with Lemon
Healtheries Green Tea with Mandarin and Lime Flowers
Healtheries Green Tea with Raspberry
Healtheries Greeb Tea with Orchard Peach
Healtheries Wild Vanilla Tea
Healtheries Golden Caramel Tea
Healtheries Chai Tea
Healtheries Green Chai Tea
Healtheries Vanilla Chai Tea
Healtheries Rooibus Red Bush Tea – Original, Honey, Vanilla
These teas contain tannins which are stimulant, and inhibit the absorption of a variety of nutrients. It is recommended that you drink no more than one of the above per day.

The following teas are safe to consume in any quantity during pregnancy and breastfeeding :
Healtheries Lemon Tea
Healtheries Cranberry & Apple Tea
Healtheries Echinacea Tea with Lemon & Vitamin C
Healtheries Tangerine & Orange with Vitamin C
Healtheries Pomegranate & Grape Tea

Hope that helps!

Yeah, but most of them are OK if you stick to one a day. Its all on the back of the packs if in doubt (ie: there will be a pregnancy/breastfeeding warning if you can't drink unlimited amounts).
We err on the side of caution, and generally advise one a day if there isn't enough evidence to say they're 100% safe.
The fruit ones are usually your best bet.

Is it true that if you drink rasberry tea around your due date it can help bring on labour? A mate really didnt want her baby to be late so started to drink it daily week before she was due and her baby was 3 or 4 days early. Has anyone heard if it worked for anyone else?

Just curious

I don't know i it's supposed to bring on labour but it is supposed to strengthen the uterus in preperation for labour or something.
Saying that I drunk it for a good few weeks before Jeoy was born - 10 days early...

raspberry leaf tea is to help with your uterus to strengthen it and to help contractions or something like that.
i was told not to drink it til i was 34wks, i couldnt seem to find it anywhere when i was pregnant with haleigh then after i had her found it in every shop i went in to and was gutted.
but im going to give it a go this time round and start looking for it now.

thanks for the lsit nikki, my midwife i ahd with haleigh gave me a huge list of yes and nos with herbal teas and i lost it.
i was told also normal tea had tanin in it, and my doctor recomended me not to drink it much if at all because of having problems with iron levels.

You can get raspberry leave capsules too. I don't like the tea, so have been advised by the dietician/naturopath at work to take the capsules (for an easier labour apparently).

Thanks for the list Nikki. I always like to have a cup of Chamomile Tea before bed - nice to relax with!

SimSam - you could always have hot water with lemon juice squeezed into it, or a teaspoon of honey - so to avoid any teas!

Chamomile comes under in section:
These teas contain small amounts of some ingredients for which safety in pregnant or nursing women has not been established. It is recommended that you consume no more than one cup per day of these teas.

We err on the side of caution when we recommend only having one cup a day. You'll probably not have any issues having more, but we don't have the data to prove its 100% safe.

I hope that helps!
