Topic: Hip and Pelvic Pain?? Posted: 01 August 2006 at 2:20pm |
Does anyone else get this just at night (not in the day) when you are on your sides? Does it gradually build up and get to the point where it feels like it is tearing and is almost too painful to move?
What do you do about it?

Yep. Oh Yep. I've been getting the most extreme pain in my hips and pubic bone/pelic region at night if I sleep on my sides. Of course, I can't sleep on my front because of the baby lump and can't sleep flat on my back because there is too much pressure and I get light headed and feel sick...so I've decided that nature has determined that I shouldn't sleep for the next 8 weeks. I've used heat packs and wheat bags on my hips, but because it is a gradual build up of pain, they don't really work. I slept on one of our reclining chairs (like a lazy boy) on Sunday night and that was the first time that I've woken up without the pain. I don't want to sleep in the lounge for the next couple of months, so last night, I had a heap of pillows and tri-pillows in bed to prop me up while I slept on my back (but in a 45' or so incline). It's tough to get to sleep that way but it worked, and no hip or pelvic pain this morning. I've spoken to my GP and she says there isn't anything that can be done about it and it should go away when the baby is born. She also said to try and keep my legs together as much as possible when getting in and out of cars and to take it easy with stairs. If you find a miracle cure, I'd be thrilled to know it

My physion suggested a plastic bag on the seat of the car makes it easier to swivel in and out too.
I get the hip pain at night if I don't turn over often enough - it feels like my whole hip is cramping up. I feel like a pig on a spit - needing to be turned all the time!
I've found the tripillow between my knees helps, I have the other part of the tri pillow running up my front propping my bump up which helps to take some of the weight off.

my hips get real sore at night too...exactly what everyone else said. I tried a pillow between teh legs but cant say it helped me that much... I have just resigned myself to having crappy sleep and being grumpy for the next 7 weeks!

I get lots of the hip pain when I'm trying to sleep too... but can't say it's so bad I find it unbearable - just really REALLY annoying. I do the whole sleep with a pillow between my legs thing, and have softened up the underlays on our bed by adding a continental blanket to them, but it only makes a small difference. At antenatal class the midwife mentioned something called a "smiley bandage" or some odd name like that - it's apparently a harness-like bandage that you can get from Physios, and it holds your hip joints together snugly, to lessen the pain. I wasn't sure if this is also for people who only have the pain when lying down though.

Have you tried using antiflamme? It is wonderful stuff and I use it quite a bit when I am massaging. Comes in a little purple container, it is all natural and smells like peppermint.

Paws - keep moving about (if possible) and Panadeine is ok during pregnancy (and work). I often find that sitting too long in one position makes it worse. You could also get Monique to write you a note to give your supervisor highlighting the issue and suggesting OSH intervention for your last few weeks there. How long have you got until maternity leave now?

I had to take maternity leave at 28 weeks with Maya coz of the pelvic pain I had. Sitting for prolonged periods atually makes it worse funnily enough.
