I hate taking any drugs during pregnancy, I even avoid panadol and only take mylanta when absolutely necessary but DH made me call our MW today about my MS and I'm off to see her soon to get a prescription for maxolon.

She said it's perfectly safe for use while pregnant but then I googled it (yes, I know, google is not my friend) and saw a whole heap of posts from people complaining that their kids now have learning disabilities and/or adhd which they put down to taking maxolon while pregnant.

Do I put up with the constant nausea and vomitting (which has made me lose weight and take time off work) or do I bite the bullet and fill the script?

I only actually vomit a couple of times a day (although I usually bring up my last couple of meals and I gag and dry retch several times a day and feel nauseous all the time except when I'm asleep) and once or twice a week I have a day when I don't vomit at all so my sickness isn't nearly as bad as some peoples.

I feel like I'm complaining about something that's perfectly normal and I should just suck it up and deal with it.

Of course, it would also be interesting to see the number of people who took Maxalon during pregnancy who have children with no problems at all.

Could it be a case of people wanting to blame something - anything? Is there any evidence to prove the Maxolon caused their problems?

I understand your concern though - I'd want to be sure too, and I doubt I'd take it faced with those details.
Do you feel able to get through another few weeks without taking anything? You're at the stage where the sickness might subside soon.
I do feel for you as I know how horrible it is (I was also constantly nauseous for the first 16 weeks)

There are other anti nausea drugs that are safe. You could PM LittleBug or post in the Jan/Feb forum as she has taken medication both pregnacys due to MS.

I think if the drugs will work and you will be able to function at a higher level then you should do it. Speak to your MW about your concerns and go from there.

Look at this way, taking Maxalon is safer for your baby than getting severely dehydrated and renal failure from severe MS Your MW wouldn't prescribe it if it wasn't safe. I'm fairly sure those aren't scientific studys that you read on google.

Hope your feeling better soon

If you're worried, you could try the herbal, more 'natural' anti-nausea varieties kebakat mentioned first and see if they help. And it may start easing off soon anyway, see how you go.

I don't know about taking Maxalon while pg, but it has certainly been my friend on a few occaisons when not. and it works, I have had the injection of it before and I stopped vomiting almost immediately, I have also had the pills, and it does work, but like I say never took it when pg...perhaps you could get the script and save it for only for the days you are feeling really nasty, from memory one tablet works well.

Here's one of the stories of bubs that were fine with their mums taking Maxalon - my SIL had it with both her boys and they're both smart little cookies and totally fine

I tried the blackmores ginger tablets myself and they did work a bit, stopped me throwing up so often anyway.

You're NOT being a sook if you need to take drugs. I didn't realise till I threw up every day that loads of people don't throw up from MS at all. So even though you mighn't be throwing up all day every day it is still unpleasant and it's still making you take time off work and lose weight.

Hiya, well i took maxolon, only for a short while though as i was very nervous about taking anything so only took it for a couple weeks i think, my main problem with it though was that i had to take it half an hour before eating anything with water, and i had trouble keeping water down, so i would sit very still for about half an hour rubbing my tummy trying to keep it down and then i would eat something and it would be ok.

I took it about 3 times a day as it wouldnt last that long for me and i would start to feel sick again a few hours later.

But im guessing everyone is different.

I would say if you dont feel too comfortable with it then try some natural ones first.

I only ended up on maxolon cos i had to go for a trip to the doctors as i couldnt keep anything down at all and had lost all up about 8kgs within a couple weeks, and was missing alot of tech.

Good luck though, and i hope you start to feel better soon, i know how much it sucks.

I took this for about half of my pregnancy. Usually only twice a day instead of 3 times. I couldnt deal with the sickness and it helped me so much

I also got given it when I was in hospital when Ruby was 5 days old and I was bf so it must be ok for bubs.

Good luck, hope it helps

I had rather bad ms and was taking maxalon, cyclizine and blackmores herbal ms tablets. although i struggled with the blackmores ones as they are like horse size tablets!!! I also had to have iv maxalon as well as Fluid replacement as the oral meds still were not cutting it.
Maxalon is one of the safest Antinausea meds im pretty sure it has an 'A' for use in pregnancy which is the same as panadol.

If your ms is making you miss work/unable to do things and your loosing weight then i would deff try it you may not have to take it for long and that way both you and bubs will be happy.

I took Maxolon with all my 3 pregnancies, only for about a week from 11 weeks with Rico, a little earlier with Gia, and from about 6 weeks with Jett for maybe 3 or 4 weeks.  I found it helped with the nausea, but didn't stop me throwing up (which I didn't mind so much it was the nausea that I couldn't handle, I'd only throw up once or twice a day mostly).  I say if you're that sick (which it sounds like you are you poor thing!) then to take it.  The other option, which I also did with the 3 pregnancies, was to go into hospital and get an IV line of fluids.  I found because I was so dehydrated the nausea was worse, but after having IV fluids it made me feel good for a little while.

Do you think you'll be feeling better once you're into the 2nd trimester?

My babies:

R (9),G (7), J (5)

Thanks for your responses.

Yes, I definitely tried the natural remedies first over the past month, all with varying degrees of little or no success.  Unfortunately my MS seems to be getting worse the further along I get instead of better.  Interestingly last time it started at about 7 weeks and finished at 14 but this time it started at about 3wks, before I even knew I was pregnant, and is getting progressively worse the further along I get.

My midwife has already threatened to send me to hospital for IV fluids if I don't start keeping down regular meals and as someone said maxlon is much safer than the alternative of getting severely dehydrated etc so I took 1 maxolon on Friday and 2 today.  It's not the instant total nausea relief I would have hoped for but I only threw up once today, made it through Michaela's swimming lesson without getting seasick and didn't gag at all plus I managed to make dinner (that's huge since Michaela has been living on rice bubbles for the past few weeks).

I spoke to my mum tonight, who's first pregnancy and birth I imitated last time, and interestingly with her next 3 she was terribly sick like me for the first 3 1/2 months.  So the moral of the story is quit while I'm ahead  (especially since after 2 dream births #3 was a horror birth).

p.s.  Just adding this so you can laugh at me:  I was getting confused at all the people calling maxolon a class A drug.  I was thinking surely that can't be safe if it's a class A drug like heroin etc.
