Topic: How to make the transition to the big bed Posted: 14 November 2007 at 10:23pm |
I've picked out Emma Rose's big-girl bed, and although we're not getting it for another month or two, I'm starting to think about how to ease her transition from cot to big bed. What are some things you did to make this step easier? What do you wish you'd done? Any tips for toddler-proofing the bedroom now that she'll be able to access all her other furniture/clothing/doorway? :)

hmmm sorry i cant help you with the transition thing, we just decided one day to take away the cot, and put the bed up and have had smooth sailing, all we did was move stuff we didnt want her touching and now she can access her room whenever and touch what she likes as there is nothing there she can break or destroy.
We also let Rhiannon see us put up the bed, and she even helped us try and put some bolts in, and she helped make the bed (by lying on the mattress while i put the sheet on).
We didnt have any sides for the bed, so to stop Rhiannon from falling out, we rolled up a large towel and put it under the bottom sheet on either side, so that when she rolled she hit the lump and stopped, only needed to use that for about 2wks.
Good luck, such an exciting time, our little ones are growing up so fast

Taine was too young to chose his own duvet - but we did let him play on the bed. He kept getting out during the day especially, but after some persistence on my part - finally went to bed by himself. Neither of our kids fell out of the bed much so never worried about the railing - i was surprised as they usualy move around a lot.

does your cot convert to a bed? Ours you can take the sides off and we did that for toby - but he kept falling out, strangely tho he didnt fall out of the actual bed he now sleeps in..
with gabriel we did day sleeps in the big bed first but we already had bunks for my husbands older boy.

We moved straight into a queen sized bed - at first we popped the mattress on the floor to get her used to it and to ensure she wasn't going to roll off then after a couple of weeks, we put the base in as well. I put a pillow on the side that she could fall out of but she never seems to move that far.

We just did this last weekend make sure the drawers can't tip over and expect day sleeps to be a bit shorter. Jack actually took himself down to his room today, shut the door and went to sleep on his own so it doesn't take long

Yes we put the mattress on the floor for the first fortnight or so, and toddlerproofed the room so he couldn't get up to too much mischief LOL. Luckily his bed (being the top half of a bunks set) has its own rail, or he'd be on the floor a lot more!
Hope your transition went well

That's a great suggestion about the rolled up towel Kaz. Lockie hopped on his little friends bed today and was lying on it and next minute rolled over and thump onto the floor well actually a couple of pillows. Somehow I think it will take my little man a bit of time to adjust. Mmmm when to make that transition!!!

Okay we put Lockie in his big boys bed in his big boys room today. Took him about 20 minutes or under to go to sleep, with only once us having to go into him and lie him down again and say no as he opened the door (we always close his door because we have cats).
Now my question is - is there a right and wrong way to do it? Do we just do day sleeps first and then go to nighttime? Or go the whole hog and do both?
I think DH is keen to just go the whole hog. I'm just not so sure especially seen he is teething at the moment too.

some people suggested to me to do day sleeps first, then move to night. but i actually found that both boys were more accepting of going during the night than day. maybe because it is dark, they automatically think sleep - and we have a stronger routine at night, whereas day they can often think "oooh in my room - play time".

Heehee, it's a really cool designer one from TwinkleStar -- I'm going on Wednesday to look at the drawings of it. It's really hard to describe but it has three-dimensional fairies and flowers and stuff on it. I'll take a photo when we get it (sometime in January, I think) -- it's a new range that TwinkleStar is going to be doing and I think I'm a bit of a guinea pig (which I totally don't mind, as I love their stuff)! We've decided to get the matching wardrobe as well so that we can put a child lock on it and not come into her room after naptime to find all of her clothes on the floor...
