Iv been milling over this since my plunket nurse mentioned something on wednesday and im still wondering what she meant by it all - She was comparing his weight gain and said with a concerned look on her face "hhhmmm hes putting on weight quite rapidly! hhhmmm" so i asked her what that meant and she never really gave me a straight answer?????? she did say i was doing an awsome job though and he was a lovely healthy bonny boy!!????

What do you think she meant?????

BTW - his weight at 3 months old was 7.5kgs and then the last weigh in at 4 months he is now 8.5kgs!

I dunno whether rapid weight gains means but it he is a big chubby cute bubba! If she said you were doing a good job, take that for what its worth and don't worry about it!

and also, for what it's worth - it's not like he started out at 6 pound and gaine dup to there - from what i remember he was fairly sizeable to begin with.
You're doing a great job, he's growing well, as long as he's in proportion i wouldn't worry about a thing

Grr Plunket - we were there yesterday and Gina hasn't gained much so we got the opposite comments. I'd say you just can't win sometimes - just ignore it.

Hugs Amber

I don't think you really have anything to worry about either. Noah weighed 7.8 kg at three months and 8.5 kg at four months and our plunket nurse just said to keep up the good work. He was 9lb at birth and has always just piled on the weight really quickly and easily. Your little man is super gorgeous.

Both my babies had a great big weight gain around that time too. I think chubby babies are cute and anyway what could you possibly do to change it? Nothing so don't worry about it

I wouldn't worry either. I think Plunket are glad to see chubby bubbas vs skinny ones (no offence, but I'm talking about babies who don't really gain - that is of far more concern than anything else). How tall is he?

he was 7lb 10oz at birth but 2 weeks early because they thought he was going to be a big baby!!

Hes 64cms long now.

Iv always thought he was super cute being so tubby but as time goes by more and more people comment on how HUGE he is!! and ask if im overfeeding him!!! to the point of asking me WHAT i feed him!!!????

Hes only 75% on the growth chart so he cant be the fattest baby in NZ!! When i said this to the P/nurse she peed herself laughing!

And anyho Im certainly no feather weight! (more like a sumo! lol ) and DH is 6ft4 and built like a brick S**T house! so what were plunket expecting!!???

I think plunket have their heads up their arses most of the time.

My friends baby is on the 97th percentile so there are bigger ones out there. Her plunket nurse said it was fine as he is tracking along the same line and his weight, length and head size are all going up in proportion.
He was a big boy to start with as well 9lb 6, a week overdue though.
There is another baby at my coffee group who is huge as well and really really chubby her doc said not to worry as he would work it off when he starts crawling.

As for peoples comments....what do they think you are feeding him? Coke and Chips?

Haha I had the same comments from our Plunket nurse on Tuesday as Xanda is in the 95th percentile for weight and only middle 50th percentile for height and she was concerned that he was a little big, 15kgs and 87cm tall. But he doesn't look that chubby and is still in size 1 pants at the age of two.

Amber, seriously... disregard the growth chart completely! I had the same problem with my plunket nurse remarking "Just make sure Hannah is getting enough exercise" after seeing that she was in a higher weight percentile than height.

If he is happy and healthy then he's fine! You can't put a baby on a diet anyway... silly people making you think that there's some thing 'wrong' with a cute chubby baby.

You'll be sad when he's taller and loses all his baby chub... I know I am now that Hannah's all tall and gangly... she doesn't look like a baby anymore!

Big hugs lv, I wouldnt care what she says. When My 12yr old was a baby my plunket nurse told me she was obese at 12mths  so I ended up at the doctors in tears thinking I was over feeding my baby. He said not to worry she was gaining well and just a big girl. She was 10lbs born and was always well covered. She is now a skinny bean pole and the funny thing is she was my chubbiest baby.

Your baby boy is just gorgeous

Andrew was the same Amber and now he is one skinny tall boy. i wouldn't worry, I got Josh weighed yesterday and he is 11kgs and only 9 months old I have a feeling that i'll probably have someting said to me too but I take it with a grain of salt and smile and nod but in fact really I don't care what they say. My dr says he is healthy and happy so i'm happy.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Ashlee ALWAYS got the 'bonny' comment. She was a big growing baby! People always asked what she weighed at birth and she was a really average weighted newborn. You really have to let those comments slide. I know how hard it is. We still get asked how old she is and people are stunned when we tell them!

having had baby astin cuddles he is just right...I dont think he is tall and he is just a chubba bubba and I dont think there is anything to worry about...most of it will drop down to "normal" when he starts crawling and walking....

and yes Leish I thought of Noah when i read this too...and wondered if they were about the same stats....and Noah is just fine!!!!!!!!!! Astin is too....and he is a cutie pie to boot - DH fell for him when he had cuddles!

6 of my MIL's 8 babies were total chubba-lubs, (it's only the very prem ones that weren't).  So much so that even strangers used to comment to her that her baby was incredibly "fat", and tell her that she was over-feeding them (WTF?!?  Thank god she told them all to get stuffed and that it was impossible to overfeed on breastmilk alone!).  And they have all turned out very healthy, and just to show the world, they all have the kind of metabolism that I am very jealous of!  Her biggest baby is now one of those women who could do with eating a couple more pies.  So in other words, I don't think that chubby baby = overweight adult, but I do think that carrying a bit of fat is really good for a baby's development.  Their little brains are growing so fast, and what do brains rely on to really make a go of it?  FAT!  Chubba-lub babies are just luscious.

Having had Astin cuddles at the gremlins B-day I have to agree that he is just perfect

Don't listen to plunket - those stupid charts!!! They don't seem to recognise anything that doesn't fit the box!! They keep threatening to not sign off on Samantha (failure to thrive) because she is so little and only just on the chart for size & weight. I just nod politely and then come home and forget about what they said. She is in no way too skinny she is just a little wee girl!
