Topic: It aint easy Posted: 10 February 2007 at 5:35pm |
I got through the horrible first 4 weeks of Ella's feeding difficulties. Then I started to be able to enjoy parenthood. And once I became confident getting out and about with baby, I enjoyed it even more. But I seem to have hit a bit of a wall, which probably has something to do with hubby working evenings again for a while (he's always working Saturdays too and sometimes Sundays) so I get Ella all to myself all day and most of the evening; Ella's going through a grizzly not sleeping phase - a growth spurt or teeth playing up or something, and I'm getting so sick of being at home in our half-renovated house but don't have the money for us to go away (which I would LOVE to do). I've got a coffee group and am about to join a new one and hope the Plunket one takes off too. I'm getting out and about with going walkies. I'm really fortunate to have some friends with little babies too. But despite all that, I've recently been pretty unhappy with being a SAHM (and I don't think employment would help in my situation). Anyway, I felt quite miserable for a while there, but think things are about to turn around. Having a good talk to hubby helped, and trying to talk to my mum only made matters worse (when will I learn that I'll only hear how she had everything worse!!!). But I wanted to say... if you're finding it really difficult - admitting it really does help things! We're not 'meant' to admit that being a mum is hard or that we feel bored or lonely or irritated sometimes, but hell, we all do at some point, right? Doesn't make us bad parents or mean we love our children any less.

I know how you feel Andie. I have a husband that is away quite a bit with his job in his busy time of year which is coming up or should I say has started, and then he plays cricket on a Saturday. I can't wait until cricket finishes - 7 more weeks and counting. So that leave family day on Sundays. I told hubby after cricket has finished its my turn to party, and it does help now that our wee man takes the bottle.
Single parents really amaze me too. But I suppose they don't know any different so they don't know whats it like to have that extra pair of hands during the evenings. They do amazingly well thats for sure. Perhaps they just grin and bear it.
Motherhood is not the easiest job and certainly the least paid but probably the most rewarding.

Having been a single parent for 18 mths I would have to say that even now I have my moments where I think it might actually be easier than having a "fourth child" in the house!
But you are so right Andie - it ain't easy, and there ain't no point trying to pretend it is! People always say to me "it must be hard having twins" and then look shocked when I say "yeah, it is." What do you want me to do, lie? Well you asked!

well done Andie!
can totally relate - am a speedway widow for 6 months of the year.. being stuck at home with kids drives me batty... i have the ptoential to become a nasty picky grumpy cow of a mother.. so when i can if they drive me nuts - i chuck em in the buggy and away we go - even if it means ih ave to wrap em in woolys with blankets and a raincover. a brisk angry walk helps to get it all out.. and hopefully some weight OFF. he he

I felt exactly the same wayAndie. Lewis works until 3am, so sleeps all day, then gets up at goes to work at 3pm- so misses the day AND night shift. It can suck big time to be left on your own all the time, especially with no car! BUT, I found what really helps for me is to have a schedule for the day.
as for single parenthood - i have no idea how people are able to do this.

Wow its amazing how we all flee so much the same. I have been feeling much the same way except I do have hubby home alot the time sometime's I think that can make it a little harder too cause you have to think of someone else as well sd the kid's and yourself hubby is really helpful, but I find it really hard to leave him alone when he is here. Which mean's he really get's no time to do what he want's.
Well said Andie you hit the nail on hte head tho about hte being bored thing I get that too, but I hate to admit I find it hard being a SAHM cause it is what I have alway's wanted. So I feel like i should be happy all hte time about my life.

Janine you have no weight! And I've only ever seen you in an absolutely ugly hospital uniform (about as ugly as the gown I was in ) hehe
Maybe you should stroll... or should I say strut... around here sometime.

Emma I hear you about the fourth child. I was a single mum for around 20 months and also think sometimes it would be easier.
And Andie it's comforting to know I'm not the only one who gets the "What do you think we did in my day" speech. you worded everything so perfectly.
Hubby works very long hours then comes home and falls asleep on the couch, yet I'm not aloud to be tired or grumpy as I'm lucky, I get to stay home all day and have lots of breaks and well hell according to hubby I don't do much all day anyway his words "How hard is it anyway"!
I love being a stay at SAHM but will admit there are some days I dream of being back in the work force but know that I would miss the kids too much and know that it's not the answer. It's nice to lnow I'm not the only one who gets frustrated.

I also feel the same except I work full time as does DH. We also live in a half completed house, so every night and in the weekend DH is working on the house. I reached a melting point so do speak and spoke to DH about it and said that we never did anything as a family so that helped and we now do a little bit more as a family. I was feeling like a single mum during the weekend and felt guilty because the kids are in creche during the week so they should have both of our attention in the weekend at the very least!

yes I have been a single parent (twice) but I had alot of family help and am lucky I did. I think motherhood SAHM - isn't an easy job - there is no start time nor finish time. Going from FT work to a SAHM to 11 week old and older 2 8yr and 13yrs, I'd say work was easier even with the pressure, but I couldn't see myself working full time and then come home. I did it with the older two but with young ones they need you so much more. And yep I find it the most differcult thing to do is to ask for help (that and sorry I was wrong LOL ) and so I beat myself up something cronic until I actually ask hubby for help.
But ladies (and men who take on the SAHM role) we all need a huge hug pat on the back and appluse (sp) for a job well done.
and the reward is when ppl tell you what great kids you have - yep that me who did that
