Topic: Normal Baby Stuff?? Posted: 22 August 2006 at 9:23pm |
Hi Ladies,
My little girl Alyssa is a little over 3 weeks old and there are a couple of things I have been wondering about that my midwife hasn't really been able to explain, and I think some of you experienced mums may have more of an idea I'm wondering if there is anything you can suggest?
I am waking up a few times a night for feeds and 2 out of those 3 times I can do it in about half an hour and be back in bed myself, however there is always 1 time that I could be up anywhere from 2-4 hours.. The other night I was up with her from 11pm to about 4am and I was really starting to stress out as she just would not settle.
What happens is, I go in to feed her, she will drink until she is finished but instead of falling asleep like the other times, she is still fully awake. If I try to put her in her cot to sleep she will begin to grizzle and then eventually start crying. When I pick her up again she indicates she is hungry so I offer her a breast again and then the same cycle happens over and over until usually she will have a big milk spew (pretty much everything she had been drinking over the course of the hours she has been awake). Once she's cleaned up she will want to drink again, then finally she will go to sleep. So yeah, that's the first issue...
The other thing is, she has a big milk spew at least once every day, sometimes more often. It doesn't distress her when she spews, it just all comes gurgling out, sometimes out her nose. I have tried burping her during and after feeds which works, in that she will burp, however doesn't seem to stop the spews or make her more comfortable. I usually know when she is going to have a spew because it follows a period of where she wants to keep drinking and is awake for a number of hours..
A friend has suggested I should just let her cry at night when I think she is going to stay awake for hours after a feed and eventually she will go to sleep, but I am worried she will spew from being so upset and then choke on it.
Will she grow out of this or does it seem out of the ordinary?

sounds normal to me - but yeah could just be wind. it sounds like she thinks that when is awake for a long time at night that it is day time. are you making sure the room is dark and very quiet still?, that may help her distinguish night and day. and at three weeks old i wouldnt let her just cry, esp if it is just wind. you couild also try maybe taking her back to bed with you to feed her, then you wont have to actually get up.
good luck. it will get easier.

Hannah used to be a very chucky baby but I got told it was becasue she was being a guts and getting too much milk at once. Also, it may look like their whole feed that comes up but apparently its not. Good luck...

I was told that too... most of baby spew is saliva.
Hrmmmm... I don't have much constructive to say, other than try burping her 2 minutes into a feed. It prevents build up of wind and means they can actually fit more milk into their little tummy. (Warning: milk will spray everywhere if you are breastfeeding!)

Thanks for your suggestions, I think I need to have a change of routine as well.. I have been putting Alyssa to bed when she falls asleep after a feed but after reading up on night feed routines, some people recommend you should put baby to bed while they're still awake but sleepy..I have tried this but she just wakes up more when she is put down and starts crying. It's like I have to have her fully asleep already before I can even put her in the cot. I can see this probably isn't a good way to encourage her to put herself to sleep...
Also, when I was in hospital, the midwifes there always told me to change the nappy to wake the baby up before a feed, and so I have continued to do this at home. When I have been reading more about other people's routines it seems a lot of people change the nappy after the feed...
Could you ladies please tell me what your usual night feeds routine is.. i.e. feed, nappy change, is baby asleep when you put them in their cot?...
Man, babies are such hard work!

Mine is wakeup get her bottle ready, go in get her up change her nappy, feed her, put her to bed while shes dopey. For me if i change her nappy at the end she wakes up and is even harder to get to sleep.

Our 'routine' around feeds is usually always the same, which is: wake Erin up, change her nappy, feed her, burp her, have playtime, then when she starts to show tired signs - wrap her up and put her down, which is usually always partly awake. With her 'night' feeds, including the one that normally happens around 3-4am, we don't always change her unless I know she's pooey - so then it's wake, feed, burp, and back to bed.
And I agree, babies ARE hard work ! I am just feeling sooo lazy today because we've had a little bit of an unsettled morning, haven't done ANYTHING useful around the house at all.

PS if by chance ur bubba has reflux the worst thing u can do is change the nappy at the end of a feed coz they will have a full tum and most likely barf everywhere.

my bubbas were alwways sucky babies - as in, they loved to suck. So they would just sit on the breast for HOURS if I let them./ I gave them a dummy and they would happily go to sleep by themselves.

Does she only do this at night time? You could try keeping her awake more during the day as she might have day and night mixed up. Jack used to do that for the sucking but not for the milk so we gave him a dummy.

Hi Pepsi, your bubs sounds very similar to both of my boys at that age.
My night time routine was a little different. When they woke up I would offer one breast, then burp, then nappy change, then offer second breast, then burp, cuddle or reoffer breast (just to comfort) then in bed once asleep.
I just about always put bubs to bed while asleep in te first few weeks. Once I have a really good routine going then I start putting bubs to bed while sleepy. Both my kids have been good sleepers....not sure if its because they are just very easy going kids or if it was the routine or what.

Hey there Pepsi!
ACK I wrote out a whole post then navigated away from the page before hitting "post reply" don't you hate that?!
Ok so anyways, if you are worried at all about reflux there is a NZ website called www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz that will help out a lot.
Also it does sound like you are having a bit of a time with "arsnic" or "amniotic" hour at the wrong time of the day, I have been there and it does suck!
My night time routine is:
7pm
Bath
Bottle
Bed
And if she wakes up at night, it's a bottle, burp, then straight back to bed. Night time is quiet time, so minimal eye contact and chatting. If she is fussing, then she isn't hungry enough so back to bed she goes.
Olivia is 3.5 months old now and has been pretty much sleeping through for the last 4 - 5 weeks. The way I did it is a "crying out" method but it worked for us.
If you are having real problems, then I suggest you ring your Well Child Health Provider (Plunket or whomever) and get their help, because they have the resources. When I was at 8 weeks, I was at my wit's end and they were wonderful.
Hope you have better luck and I hope this helps in some way
