Topic: Not happy about this... Posted: 07 April 2008 at 12:53pm |
I had an appt at the hosp to fill out all the paperwork for my D&C. They went over the history of the pregnancy and told me at that my first 2 scans, the sonographer had found problems with the gestational sac and yolk sac and hence suspected the pregnancy would not be viable (despite the heartbeat).
At the scans, no one told me this. They told me everything looked normal. I only had the last scan as I said I was worried about the dates.
The reports I was sent after the scans didn't mention the concerns.
I presume they didn't want to worry me but I feel I should've been told so I could've prepared. Because I've been so nauseous etc etc and saw a heartbeat I thought it would all be ok and I wish I had known so I could prepare.
Would you be unhappy about this too?

OMG definitely. I don't think they had the right to decide what would upset you or not. I think they should have said that they had some concerns even if everything had of turned out ok, just to give you the chance to prepare yourself.

I would be so angry! One thing I always appreciated with my m/c's was the honesty from the Radiologists! Better to know upfront if there is problems. I am very surprised nothing was mentioned at the scans!
I wouldn't be going back to that place!

It is not their job to spare you pain, it's their job (and their responsibility) to tell you the facts. No medical professional has the right to keep anything from you, you are entitled to be fully informed whether its good or bad news. I had some stuff come up during my pg that I only found out when the m/w was talking to me, I ended up writing a complaint.

I would be very upset - i thought that was the reason for the reports, to pass on any information that came from the scans. I would be tempted to follow up further on it...
On and here is a just for you!

At my second scan, she said she was "not happy" at first but when she saw the heartbeat she said "thank goodness I was getting worried" and when I asked her if the heartbeat meant it was now ok and if she was still worried she said she was not worried but I could have a scan in another 2 weeks if I felt concerned.

I would be so mad too. Especially since you did see a heart beat so most people would stop worrying IYKWIM? Imagine if you had gone out and bought all this stuff (I know its not all about money) but its still so wrong.

In my gut I think I knew something was wrong which is why I was so reluctant to make a time for the 3rd scan. Although having the facts wouldn't have changed things, I just wish I'd known what to prepare for.
It is in the past though so I won't spend too much time getting upset about it...it's not worth it.

They have a legal and ethical obligation to keep you informed. That said, sometimes what the sonographer sees and interprets is quite different to what the radiologist (reviewing doctor) sees when he/she reviews the films.
For example, I had a scan with the gremlins and was told everything was normal, when I got the report, it said that Twin1 had a dilated right kidney and Twin2 has dropped below the 10th percentile for weight, both of which were major concerns. The sonographer may or may not have picked up on them, but it is the radiologists job to interpret and report on the findings of the scan.
So your reports should definitely have outlined the concerns.

Yeah I would be upset about it, you have right to know what is going on and they should have told you the facts whether they were good or bad.
I know that with my m/c the scan result allowed me to prepare for the worse so although it didn't change the outcome it did allow it to not come as a huge shock.

Fiona, I"m really sorry this has happened to you; I would be very angry too. Perhaps the sonographer was trying to spare your feelings or wasn't sure but if it was the latter reason, then that's when she/he needed to call in someone else for a second opinion!! As for sparing your feelings well there are tactful ways of saying things adn I would rather know in advance as much as it would hurt than go on and experience what you have had to.
If you're up to it after your D&C, maybe it may help to write a letter of complaint. It would be awful to thik of someone else going through this when it could be 'solved' quite easily (ie tell the bloody truth!).
Grrrrr. I am so cross for you babe.
Bless you though.

I would be furious. I don't envy sonographers their jobs - I'm sure lots of times they give good news but they have to be able to give the bad news as well.

Fiona, the first time I lost a pregnancy I found that the person doing my scan just beat around the bush, and wouldn't confirm what I could blatantly see on the screen.
I was so hurt and was very angry toward the scanner for a long time.
But I think you're right - it's not worth getting upset about it. Whatever their intentions were, they got it wrong for you and you certainly deserved better. But I am sure at the end of the day they don't do this on purpose, they're just trying to do their jobs with sensitivity... be that right or wrong.
I have been thinking about you a lot, and hope you're ok. I do admire your strong attitude, but hope you're getting love, attention and support too.
Hugs!
