Can someone tell me what Parents As First Teachers does. I've rung and left so many messages trying to get some info but no-one ever calls me back.

Thanks.

I have a lady from PAFT come and see me and Alex each month and she's WONDERFUL. She talks to me about Alex's development, gives me ideas for games I can play with him, homemade toys I can make and so on. I really look forwards to her visits.

She also gives me hand-outs and writes up a report for me each visit.

i have a lady who comes each month too and she is great!!!!i love my paft lady over here and i am so sad that this months visit will be her last as tash has 'graduated' and she is leaving for another organisation, but i will still see her heaps with her new job she is doing lol.
she teachs me all sorts games and stuff to do with tash and helps out with any problems i have(like when tash went thru a faze of not going into her carseat, and how time out doesnt work for her)....and also what toys to get as sometimes i get a bit stuck.

I should say I had paft with my no 2 as she was born 10 weeks early and my plunket nurse thought it would be beneficial for us to track her to see if she was catching up or behind

Just curious, what is a usual candidate? I always assumed it was whoever wanted it could get it?

If it's the same thing my sister did/used then they do select people that seem more in need of it as there are limited spaces. For some areas with really limited numbers, I think preference is given to those babies/toddlers who may have some kind of disability that could affect their development.

I'm not sure if its the same organisation (although it sounds exactly the same) so don't quote me on that.

Every one who had a new born use to be able to apply if it was your first child, but last year the funding was cut back and they unfortunatley now need to choose on a needs basis which kinda sucks , as most of us being a first time mum have absolutely no idea what to do lol!!!

Single parents also get preference too - because my husband is the in defence force and is posted away I apparently count as a single parent, hence my visits.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to get the booklets off Nictoddie. I was interested as I wanted to learn things to teach the kids.

Bombshell we are back in NZ but won't be able to make the Xmas Botany meet as we've got something on that day unfortunately. I was wanting to meet some other Mums as none of my friends have kids the same age as Zac and he is missing all of his Saudi friends...will try to make it to the next one.
