Topic: Pain relief in labour Posted: 15 November 2006 at 1:15pm |
I have a question for those "experienced" at labours (lol). You know how "transition" (between 1st stage of labour and 2nd stage) is described as the time when everything feels out of control etc and a lot of women have "I can't do this any more" feelings at that point.... Well, after you are in 2nd stage do you still have the out of control feeling or is that mostly just for transition?
I'm asking because in both my pregnancies I have had an epidural at/by transition but this time I don't want to go that way.... I guess I kinda want to know what I'm in for. I know what transition feels like, does it continue? (I'll be opting for gas, by the way.)

Hmmm, "experienced" I am not, really after one labour! But I didn't experience that out of control 'can't do this anymore' thing during transition, and wouldn't have a clue when I was in transition (hubby would probably know - maybe it was when I started what he calls the "son of satan growling"?!? oh how embarrassing!). I got to the "can't do this anymore" stage at the end of the second stage of labour- towards the end of pushing, while Ella was still turning. Heck, I had an hour and a half of trying!

With my first if I can remember (13 yrs ago) it was very hard transition stage, I only had gas and air and pethadine, once you get to the pushing you are so focused on that I ended up throwing away the gas and air by that stage, my second I skiped the transition stage (she wrote rapid transition stage) so you maybe lucky being your third that you may have a quick transition stage - to be honest I don't know how long it lasts anyhow as the last thing on your mind at that stage is what time is it?

I had an epi both times and it was near the end, well what was suppose to be the end (3hrs pushing) that i needed it, i did the transition stage etc but the out of control feeling carried on for me and with Addison the epi had worn off during pushing and thats when i started to feel out of control with her. the whole not knowing how long it was going to last and being so uncomfortable between contractions was horrible, plus i was thinking oh man i cant do this for 3 hours like i did with Kobe. luckily it was only 15 minutes but it felt like forever. not sure if thats any help

I've had two drugfree labours now... during the transition stage with Kiya (in a spabath with my head on my mum's hands) I went to sleep and told everyone to wake me when it was all over! Once I woke up (about 10 minutes later) it was all on, and I was ready to push.
With Josiah, I got to the hospital not long before the transition stage started, and I was actually hooked up to monitors... I don't remember feeling out of control, but rather I was hating being on the bed and I wanted to get into the bath as soon as I could... I felt like my midwife made me stay on the bed for at least 30 minutes but Nat tells me it was more like 15.
So, the end of my ramble is no, it doesn't continue

I Remember with Mikey that after the transition I felt very in control like I totally knew what I was doing. I felt more out of control after he was born. With Alan I can't even remember transition

I felt in control even through transition. I felt out of control when pushing coz my body was doing most of it for me and i was only adding ontop of it. I also felt out of control coz Ella came really quickly!

Gosh when I went into transition with Briona (I didn't with Hannah), I started shaking and everything! I wonder if that was because I had artificial rupture, usually that speeds things up.
Sounds like next time will probably be a lot easier, especially if Krystiana doesn't go posterior like Briona did. I had 3 hours of second stage, my m/w reckons that will likely be a lot quicker this time around it didn't really seem that long at the time anyway.
Thanks ladies, I feel a bit more positive about it... I guess I'll probably go "down" again yet but we'll see

I felt really out of control during transition - I vomited a few times, and was swearing and yelling and all over the show, almost bit Jono, and wanted to punch my midwife in the face - but then when the pushing came it was far more controlable (is there such a thing in labour ). I ended up having a c-section cos he wouldn't come out, but if he had been born naturally I reckon the transition part would have been the hardest. But then thats just me!!

With Maya they let the epi wear off to time the contractions as the CTG couldn't pick them up accurately and I remember being in so much pain and I vomited and I think I actually DID feel out of control, but I never got the "I can't do this" thoughts until I was pushing (at which point I actually said I can't do this and my m/w said it's a bit late for that love")
With the twins I wasn't even aware that I was in transition, probably because I wasn't expecting it to be so quick. I was aware that the contractions were close together and quite painful and the m/w said I might be in transition but I didn't think it was that bad. I never felt out of control, I actually felt quite empowered and was glad that the epi didn't work so I got to experience the whole thing coz I would have been way too chicken to opt not to have the epi by choice.

I got stuck on 9cm for about 6 hours and up until then I was in control and kept all the pain to myself It was then that I started making noise and trying to give up thinking the midwife was lying that it wasn't time for the baby to come. It was also when I had the gas although it did nothing for the pain it kinda made me more in control. My body tried to push before I was allowed so pushing actually was a relief and made me feel in control. I have to say tho pushing bubs out was a million times more painful than transition.
