I assume that it's okay if you eat it cold from the fridge and not after it's been sitting out getting warm and germy.

Read the back of the packet - some are made with non-pasteurised cheese which is a no-no. I found a handful with a warning to that effect on the bottom when I was pg with DD.
Assuming that it's not one of those, I'd eat it if it's a freshly opened packet. But actually it's super easy to make yourself and I don't think I've eaten bought pesto since I learnt how to make it

Can't see why not, as long as you eat within 2 days of opening. It must be something in the pesto, apparently it is the tahini in hummus that makes it a no-no as a bad batch of tahini came into the country years ago.

my midwife today said so long as most things like feta etc are in a sealed packet, I can have some but once it is opened it has to be used for cooking or eaten by the rest of the family.

Sounds pretty paranoid to me! The thing is, you can get food poisoning from pretty much anything, but what are the chances?

Listeria tends to come from soft cheeses - and pesto only has parmesan in it. I can't see that it would have any problem. I've never heard of issues with it before.

Yeah, make it yourself fresh. Pesto has been linked to botulism. Botulism likes the garlic and oil combo.

I know it does sound really paranoid but if you do get food poisoning it can have devastating effects on your baby. I don't always like ti but I follow the 'rules' when I am pg, really it's only for a very short period in my life

agree . I had a wicked bout of gastro when pregnant and everything was fine, and I think safe choices - such as refrigeration etc, and personal hygiene are the best you can do to prevent nasty things happening
