Because you can transfer the listeria through your breastmilk, apparantly. Which is annoying because as good as my homemade sushi was, it just isn't quite the same. Plus it takes a whole lot of effort just for a 3 minute meal!!! Maybe I'm just lazy though....

I havent heard about listeria being tranfered thru breast milk? I thought it was only harmful for elderly ppl and pregnant women, it didnt say anything about breastfeeding in the info i got given on listeria...hmmm ill ask my midwife about that tomorrow I think, to be sure before I pig out on it lol

but you aren't suseptible like you were when you were preg as your immune system is back to normal(see Emma's post) of course you could still get it but its unlikely..

i totally get how it is way too much effort:)

Not at all! The only way baby could get listeriosis post birth would be if you fed him or her something contaminated, or (highly unlikely) ate something contaminated and had traces of it on your hands when you fed bub or prepared feeds, so as long as you wash your hands etc. you're fine.

It really only is a risk during pregnancy because a) your immune system is compromised and b)it can cross the placental barrier without presenting as symptomatic in the mother.

Slightly off topic but just wanted to add, I had a severe 24 hour bug with daioreha (sp?)and vomiting when Lauren was just 4 weeks old and I continued b/f even though I was very ill. Lauren did not catch what I had as it couldn't be transferred through my breastmilk and my breastmilk gave her immunity from catching it from me!! My m/w assured me of this, and she was right!

Slightly off topic, but I just wanted to let people know a great benefit of b/f through sickness and that it can be done.

Now back to the subject at hand....

mmmmmm Sushi! FOr the record, my cousins wife is Japanese and she ate all that food through both her pregnancies but of course it was all homemade.
But for me, I cut out everything they said to be careful of. Am too scared no matter how small the risk
But, my sister has been told she is not welcome to visit me at hospital if she doesn't arrive with a sushi pack and a custard square hehe

I just thought I'd add white_rabbit they now have preserved chicken in cans that is not different from eating the tuna so you could put chicken in your sushi!

Ditto that Maya, I cant think of anything worse than canned chicken. Yuck. I have gone off the whole idea of eating sushi this pregnancy - the thought churns my stomach. On the otherhand - I cant wait to eat shellfish again - muscles, scallops etc here I come!

Hi Guys

While pregnant I would advise that you stay away from anything that has rice in it, unless you have cooked it fresh yourself.

What most people don't realise is that rice is one of the biggest causes of food poisioning around. Raw rice is fine but when it is cooked the protein structure in it changes and you shoould treat it like you would chicken and other meats.

When rice is cooked it should be spread out on a large tray to cool rapidly and then be covered and refrigerated. Reheat only once and it MUST be piping hot before you eat it.

2 hours is the maximum limit before bacteria growth reaches levels that make it unsafe to eat and this includes the cooking, cooling and production of the product into something else and then the serving of it.

While I know it is a pain and you might be craving certain things, unless you have made it yourself to be honest I would advise against eating anything savoury or cream/dairy filled from any restaurant, cafe, takeaway, Supermarket, delis etc. Some of the food hygiene practices and cooking methods at these places are very suspect.
It's not worth the risk and it's only for 9 months!

PS. I was a fully qualified working chef for 10 years before changing careers and knowing what goes on I am certainly not going to take a chance on risking my baby's life.

PPS sweet stuff like cakes (no cream) or muffins etc are okay as sugar is a natural inhibitor of bacteria

Ive found it quite tricky when Im out and about and Im REALLY hungry, where I would normally grab a sammie or sushi or subway etc I now cant and its so annoying. Especially over summer when I didnt want hot food I wanted a nice chicken and avacado sammie or a plain ham sammie but couldnt GAH so annoying, but definitly NOT worth the risk, so Ive only had hot ham and Ive had subway once or twice with the meat WELL heated.

I will eat hot meat pies from the bakery though, I was never told not to eat them. I was told to stay away from the likes of KFC and like any kind of chicken that I havent cooked myself.
