Topic: Swaddlebees leaking through seams Posted: 18 September 2008 at 1:25pm |
Livvy's swaddlebee AIO's keep leaking and after having a little play with a cup of water I found that they leak through the leg seams (the stitching) really easily.
Is there anything I can do to stop this as they are such cute nappies? I've tried stuffing them with more inserts so absorbancy isn't the issue. As soon as the wee's gets near the edge it soaks straight through.

Does the water roll off the fleece? cos if so you could try stripping them to remove build up of washing powder and that should help.

Nope, the water soaks in straight away. I thought that it might've been the case and that's why I thought I'd test it.
Can you ruin the nappy by unpicking the stitching? I suppose the holes have already been made though so the liquid would still leak through those.

it may appear that it is the stitching but it is probably only cause that is the place of least resistance. swaddlebees arent a nappy for heavy wetters or prolonged use because they are so trim in the crotch. it may just be leaking cause it just too much for it to handle.
if you do think it is the stitching tho i have heard that a burst in the dryer can help seal stitch holes.

You could try putting them in the dryer on warm/hot for 10mins to reseal the PUL - I had to do this to my Fuzzis once and it worked a treat, without doing any damage to the nappies.

My naps ONLY go in the dryer Would it make a difference if I did it when they were dry and opposed to just after they had been washed?
They have leaked after only an hour and the inserts are barely wet. I'll try the dryer thing and try stripping them again anyway just in case it is that.

I was going to ask the same thing- if you bought them new from an approved seller (Mums & Bubs?) then I'd contact them.

Yeah, bought them new and we've been emailing but she just recommends the same, stripping, recheck fit, etc. I'll give it a go and see. I might try turning the dryer up a wee bit too and see if your suggestion there helps at all as well.
If worst comes to worst I might try and unpick the seam on one of them and then do the dryer thing to try and shrink down the holes and see if that helps.

Was is through mums and bubs? cos I had problems with swaddlebees and in the end I got a store credit which I used to get a different brand of nappies. Mine when I poured water on them it just rolled off the top of the fleece and didnt' soak in, so I stripped them following her instructions but then they still wouldn't last more than an hour on him, so I got the hump and finally she took them back.

Hmm, sounds exactly the same and it was mums & bubs too but through trade-me. We would be leaking out within an hour also.

Yep I was quite annoyed cos they had been recommended by her when I was pregnant and I later found out they aren't the best for boys or heavy wetters because of them being so trim.
I ended up getting mommys touch, which have been ok, no leaks but they haven't worn that well, which they should have considering she said that I would get 2-3 kids through them and also some of the stitching around the velcro has come undone.
She sells bumgenius as well so if you do end up swapping to something else they are what I would recommend. Not sure what other brands she has as I haven't bought any of her for a long time.
I really did have to say "no I have enough give me money back" before she would.

That sucks that you didn't find the other brand very good either. I already have 6 bumgenius nappies (our most reliable nappies by far) and I want to keep trying different brands. I got the swaddlebees very cheap so no loss there really and I might try pulling the stitching out and seeing if that helps at all. It's no loss if it doesn't work anyway. Its a real shame though because they are such a darn cute nappy!

Does the nappy have the velour lining? I've had problems with the velour lining on a swaddlebee pocket and it was because they have a layer of microfleece behind the velour and it was acting as a barrier layer and the wee wasn't getting into the insert and just leaking straight out. So I unpicked the overlocking holding the velour and microfleece together and now put the insert between the velour and microfleece and yay! No leaking :D Of course this won't help you with an AIO but just thought I'd give you a reason why it could be leaking.

Yeah, it is a velour lining. the velour and microfleece are sewn together and I'm not too sure if I'd be able to unpick that part of the nappy. I'll have a look though. I'm willing to sacrifice one of them if I can find something that works. It's an AIO but the swaddlebees AIO's also have a pocket opening so I might be able to get it off. The microfleece is only a strip down the middle too and doesn't reach the edges. The back of the velour is like a mesh and that's all there is between the edge of the microfleece and the edge of the nappy, which may also be why it's leaking.
This is a picture of it turned inside out. It's quite a large gap I would've thought.
Maybe I should just unpick the microfibre out of it and use it as a regular pocket nappy with my other inserts instead.

I hate to say it but my sister also had trouble with Mums and Bubs. She bought a set of Mommy's Touch and it took ages to get he delivery, then she didn't get the colours she ordered & wrong inserts etc. Then after less than a year the elastic went in a few of the nappies. They were eventually replaced but I don't think she'd use the company again.
If you do get a credit and want to try another nappy I've read good things about the Blueberry Delux that Mums & Bubs are now selling. They do a one-size nappy in both poppers & velcro and their inserts are supposed to be really good.

I think that's a much easier idea that unpicking elastic etc.
I just checked out the AIO I have here and yes, the gap is that big, but the 'webbing' looks different. Mine has microfleece.
Hope you manage to get some use out of it - they are pretty cute little naps!

1 of the 4 nappies had fleece but the rest were all that webbing stuff.
I had a few issues when I bought them too. The original ones I had bought never turned up (she said that maybe somebody had taken the parcel off her doorstep before the courier could pick it up - not a very safe way of getting the courier to pick it up if that was true) and then she replaced the missing ones with these ones which were different colours.

They sound like my SB AIO's :) How many times have you washed them... I found mine took awhile to get up to absorbancy. I love mine now tho. If you are up for sacrificing one nap... you could try unpicking the mf booster? I find mine leaks if I don't have any booster in the pocket... I just put a 3 layer bamboo that's really trim and it will then last as long as any of my other naps.
Good luck sorting the issue, as they are a really cute nap and lovely and trim.

I have used them on Livvy quite a lot so I thought that they would've been washed enough times by now. I have tried 2 layers of hemp, 3 layers of bamboo and a 2 layer bamboo trifold (6 layers) and none of them held up. The top of them would get a little wet before they leaked and the rest of it would be dry as anything.
When I get a bit of time, I'm going to cut the microfibre out of one of them and put in a better fitting microfibre insert and see if that fixes the problem.
It's good to hear that they're actually working for you though. It gives me some hope as I really don't want to give up on these.
