Topic: swollen ankles - ideas for relief? Posted: 30 August 2008 at 3:25pm |
My ankles have been getting more and more swollen recently. It was very bad last night and i could hardly sleep as they felt so painful.
Any ideas/tips as to what may relieve them? I sleep with my feet on a pillow - would soaking them in hot water in the evening help or am i better off keeping them elevated as much as possible?
I finish work after next week so hope things wont be so bad then . ..

When you are at work have them elevated there as well. Whenever you can rest. They totally suck but once baby is here they get so much better.

Having your legs elevated where and when possible is the best medicine....Not long for you now though. Best of luck...Take Care

Hot water will make them feel worse. My feet & ankles were so sore and swollen with Sam and I used the find the only thing that gave me any relief was to either keep them elevated when possible or soaking them in cold water.

Also get your partner to massage the fluid back down your legs towards your heart as can help with getting rid of it. Helped me alot as I had major swelling.
Also swimming is awesome for swelling so you may want to start that when you finish work.
Do keep an eye on it though as I felt fine but had swelling from about 33 weeks. At my MW appt at about 37w4d my BP spiked and things turned to custard pretty quickly although I still felt sweet until the day of my induction.
Not tos care you but do keep an eye on it as it is the 1st sign of PE usually.

Oh I had this really bad, I feel for you. The things that helped me were soaking them in cold water and then having them elevated and massaged (the massage was the best).

Yeah, what everyone else said, but they go down so fast once bubs is born, it was such a relief being able to wear shoes again! I had to graduate in jandals cos its the only thing that fit me lol
Watch for it turning hard too (oedema) as swelling is fine, but if you have other PE symptoms and then the swelling turns into oedema then you need to ring your m/w. I used to be able to poke my feet and then there would still be a massive indent an hour later.

I used to keep moisturiser in the fridge and then get my feet massaged with that, man it was good.
Yay for maternity leave

try to keep them cool. Having them elevated is a bit of a catch 22 though, as it encourages baby to turn posterior. If you're spending time with your feet elevated, make sure you spend as much time on your hands and knees to keep baby anterior

I used a wheaty bag that I had put in the freezer for a few hours so it was nice and cold. I then sat on the couch with my feet up and laid the wheaty bag across them. Worked a treat! I even used it at night in bed.
(I was due in summer though so you may not want to be doing that in winter.)
