Has anyone put their toddler in a bunk bed? My lad will be sharing a bedroom with his older brother (who would be in the top bunk) in a few months and hubby wants to get bunks but I'm worried that he's still a bit young - he will be 2.5yrs. I've "googled" suitable ages for bunk bed use and the general consensus is from age 6 onwards (in the top bunk), but there must be others who've put their littlies into a bunk bed before 6yrs?

Anyone's experiences on this appreciated!

I personally would not be putting a child under 5 in a bunk bed for me just way to dangerous (my lovely mum who is a nurse did share some pretty horrific stories of young children and bunk bed accidents)
My boys (nearly 6yr and nearly 3yrs) i think would go crazy and end up hurt. So for now they are in a cramped room, even on thir beds now they play sily games and end up hurt. I'll be waiting till DS2 is at least 5yrs.

I can't see how putting your toddler in the bottom bunk could be much different to a normal bed - are you worried about him climbing up the ladder to the top bunk and falling off? if so, could you just remove a few of the rungs or something so he couldn't reach?

We have bunks in Leahs room, she sleeps in the bottom one (like a normal bed) we have only had one issue of her climbing up to the top bunk but she won't be sleeping up there for a while yet.

My sister has bunks and her boys 5.5yrs and 3 share the room and have done ofr at least 6 months in the bunks. They have no problems at all.

Keira used to sleep in a top bunk - although we built it ourself and it wasnt that high.
We never had a problem with her falling out, a lot of bunks you get these days have high sides around the whole top bunk. Keira was always very cautious about getting up and down.

One day when Maddi is out of her cot we are going to have to look at putting her in a real top bunk and I am hoping she will be fine.

As for sleeping in a bottom bunk I think that is totally fine, except you may just have to watch out for them climbing onto the top one.

My kids aged 5 & 3 are in bunks and have been for about a year, by thier choice. Youngest is in the bottom bunk of course. we just had a rule that the youngest does not go up or down the ladder. If she wants up there then an adult had to be with her. She tried it once herself and fell off the ladder (was only up one step so didnt fall far) but it freaked her out and we have never had a problem with it.

We were set on buying bunks for our two...until the smaller one "I can be like superman", and that idea died. they really want them, but I know they will jump off (well, i know Taine would) and we have already had one broken arm,

I would say, you know your kids, if you think they will be fine, go for it. I KNOW even now taine wouldn't.

I wouldn't want to put my boy in bunks, I just know he would be trying his hardest to climb up it all the time trying to kill himself lol

My 3yo has bunks in her room.  She sleeps in the bottom bunk and plays on the top bunk (it's her tower).  I don't see it as any worse than playing on the higher platforms at the playground but I wouldn't let her sleep on the top bunk.

We've had no issues with her mind you that's partly due to her personality, she's very careful when she's had dangers (which we tend to exaagerate) pointed out.

We are planning on getting bunks for our boys when they are older.   One isn't born yet so won't be for a while.

I think it comes down to the child and their personality I guess. I wouldn't put Sam (2yrs 3 months) in a bunk as he is one of THOSE kids that just can't help themselves and is pretty fearless and adventurous, but I think when he's older it would be ok.   His cousins have bunk beds and they are 5 and 3, and I'm pretty sure they haven't had any falls from them.

DD has bunks and if Caleb manages to get into her room he is on the top bunk opening the windows (that are really high off the ground) as quick as a shot. Personally I wouldn't let him sleep or even play in a room with bunks, but he's a climber and not all kids are.

No way with Spencer, he would be up that ladder then "1, 2, 3, go" and off the top bunk on to floor

Well my boy's have been in bunk's and to be honest they are older ones that don't even really have a safety rail Alan our oldest has been in there since he turned 4 I think like someone said before you know your kids I know Alan is a very settled sleeper and not likely to fall.   Would have said no way would I let Mikey in the top bunk till he was lots older cause he is a wriggle bum however he often sneak's into bed with Alan and they are often both asleep in the top not had an issue, but it is not my ideal.   Oh and mine have never jumped off to the floor, but then of course my kids are just not like that and the day I heard them talk about it is the day they come down.

My 2 are in bunks, by their choice. DD7 enjoys sharing a room with DS2 (bonus for us it's easier to heat 1 room!)

DS2 is on the bottom which is a double. He'd be first up that ladder too but we removed it! DD loves monkeying up to bed at night, hehe.

I would definitely not put Lucas in the top bunk!

We had bunks but used the top just for keeping toys (and removed the ladder). Caprece was sleeping on the bottom but she managed to climb up the top herself and fell off However Jack never attempted it so it does really depend on the child.
