Amelia is number 66 on the american list, and doesn't 'rate' a mention on the NZ one. That's fine with me ... didn't think there were that many Amelia's around, but since having her, have heard of a few.

There have been quite a few Amelias born here in the last 18 months or so, and Jacob was at a lull when we had him, but in the few weeks after him, there was at least one a week, according to the birth notices in the paper
One of our girls names is in the NZ top 10, but not the baby centre top 100. I like it, it is a nice solid name. We are still arguing over boys names at this moment, although we do agree on Ben. I really like Elijah, Eli for short, but I think that is a no go.

If we have another boy we are seriously screwed for names. We had enough trouble agreeing to jake and Taine.

I actually wanted Dakota as Brooke's first name but ex didn't so thats how it ended being a middle name thing is Brooke doesn't like it - go figure - she's always asking why i did it lol.
ps it maybe because there was this boy at school called Dakota and he was really naughty and Brooke didn't like him.

Liz, you could always go for Elwood, that is what our bump is affectionately known as ATM. In fact, I actually quite like it, but Rod dosen't have the balls. Jake was *almost* Jed, but that got vetoed when we did the backyard "call out" thing and the dog went crazy EVERYTIME we yelled it out! I really REALLY liked Kimber for a girl, but I have got this buzz about shortened names, and if it was a name that was going to be shortened (and lets be realistic, we can call them their full names, but when they go to school, kids do shorten things..)it had to be something I liked, hence Jake (which I actually like better than Jacob, but Rod didn't)and, no offence anyone, but I really HATE the name Kim (sorry, Kim, no offence) so that was a no go as well...heh, i digress, once again... (bored)

We haven't decided on a name, and I think it is annoying DH's parents as they are always asking us if we have picked a name everytime we see them.
I have a few I like and they are on the list, just have to work it out when he arrives. It is hard to name a child when your DH works with children all day, I mention a name and I get "nope, horrible kid with that name". When we named Andrew the hospital midwifes were like great a normal name for once. They had a period of really out there names and one even said she felt sorry for the child as it had been called something really stupid.

I am a name nazi - some of the ones i see teaching are not just stupid but actually plain disgusting. I truely believe that there should be a veto at registration of births allowed. That would get rid of the people who call their kids attractive things like 'acid and hash' (twins), or who spell names phonetically incorrectly so the child takes twice as long to learn how to spell their name and then spend the rest of their life speling it for others.
I like popular names. I usually have a double up in every class (though we always ensure there is never more than 2 kids with the same first name placed in a class together). They have never minded yet - I loved it when I was in the same class with kids with my name as we used to make up names for the teacher to call us instead. Usually they obliged!
The only time I have seen it be a problem for kids is when the 2 with the same name are different genders. They both hate that, which is why I personally avoid gender neutral names when considering what we will call the parasite.

"the parasite" is an excellent name for it now
I've called it that at times as well when I'm feeling like sh*t and DH cracks up at me every time, my mother however gave me the evils when she heard me say it lol

In Japan there actually is a veto on names. ONly some characters can legally be used as names, which is why the parens of the Japaense version of "demon" were not allowed to name their kid that.
can you imagine?
"I'd like to name my child (blah blah)"
"I'm sorry, but we can't allow that because it is stupid."
Cool, I now have a new possible career

I call Hannah "Demon Child" or variants of... (for a while she was affectionately known as "Devily") and I get heaps of weird looks when I am out in public. Have tried to tone it down... but really, it suits her!

It's frustrating being in an office situation (etc) and having to call a gender-neutrally-named-stranger on the telephone - or worse, at the door. Um hi is Lee there? Oh um do you know when er Lee will be available? Awkward awkward awkward!!
Miss I used to think similar to you about hard names to spell as I've always had to spell mine (Teresa) because there are sooo many different spellings. But then I got married to a last name which always has to be spelt (actually my maiden name did too) and have so far lived at 3 addresses (out of 5) which needed spelling.... and I figure it's probably just part of life. So now we have Briona and Krystiana

But Briona and Krystiana are both pretty names that follow spelling rules!! I hear you on the spelling of surnames. My maiden name was 4 letters long, but an unusual variant of a more common name. People would try to correct me when I spelt it to them! Like I don't know how to spell my own name As we get more and more multiculural names most people end up having to spell them these days, I have no problem with that. Tiffany as Typhphane I do have a problem with, as the function of the e in that letter combination is to moderate the a to a long sound, not make a y sound!
Lol Nikki! Demon child is a good one.

There is a woman I know (vaguely) who named her daughter Jazzmyne- its a normal name but why spell it so weird? Poor kid is going to have so much trouble spelling it out later on.

I'm a bit of a retard some of the crazy spelling I can't figure out how to pronounce it it took me ages to read jorja as georgia.
I knew Jack was #1 in NZ there are 2 other Jacks in our playgroup. At the time we didn't realise it was so popular. At one school I was the only Rachael out of 250 and then I changed schools and there was 7 out of 150. My last name is Campagnolo so an easy first name was good.
Emma I think or Mercedes as that really pretty girl in ANTM in the second season I think

I know what you mean Kylie, sometimes Kobe gets called Kob cos people dont know if the E should be sounded out but at the same time you can pronounce it Ko-Be. Thats the way Kobe Bryant spells it so we liked that and went with it but my SIL thought we should spell it Koby but i didnt like that. Hopefully Addison should be easy, I purposly didnt spell it funny like Addyson or Addisyn cos we have a horrible last name and ALWAYS have to spell it.

I'm with you on the last name thing, thats why I like normal spellings and plain names. Our Surname starts with a Z and its dutch - personally I don't like it and would of preferred to "-" it with my maiden name but then we would still not all have the same surnames.
We call Andrew "Monster" he sometimes refers to himself as "monster" as well. It suits him and hes happy with it. Probably a name that will stick with him.
My cousin is an Emma-Lee pronounces Emily. I have no idea why my aunty spelt it that way. I know my cousin gets really annoyed with people spelling it Emily, but that is something she will have to take up with her mother.
I'm liking Joshua and Alex at the moment, my only fear with Alex is people will think it is Alexander and I don't like that name.
