Topic: preeclampsia Posted: 17 December 2007 at 3:40pm |
I've just had bloods taken cos there's a possibility I may have preeclampsia. BP isn't REALLY high but it's gone up a lot compared to what it used to be, I have puffy feet/ankles, fingers and face, and protein in my urine. None of the other signs though, and as my midwife said it could just be nothing.
So of course now I'm worrying while I'm waiting for the results, and I like to be prepared.
For those of you who have had preeclampsia, did you have to go into hospital straight away? Why do you have to be admitted, what do they do in there? Did you have to be induced? How long did you have to stay in hospital for?
Also has anyone has preeclampsia without having a really high BP, but high for them? I was 110/60 at beginning of pregnancy, went up to 120/70 last week and 120/82 this week. So not over the 90 mark, which is when they start getting worried, but high for me.
I'm probably being paranoid but I just like to know what might happen if the blood results come back not so good.
TIA

Hi Arohanui,
I had it with my pregnancy, but I was having twins, so twice as likely to get it than a single pregnancy.
My BP was 117/70 at the begining of my pg, and when I was admitted to hosp the 1st time it was 110/95 with 1++ protien in urine and puffiness everywhere. I had had the protien show up and went to annex to collect a 24hr urine sample kit, where the OB said to take BP before I left, and I never got to leave
after 1 week, and the meds stabilsing BP, I went home. was home for 4 days and BP rose again to 110/100, and that was at 31 wks, I never left again after that, and was induced at 34wks + 3 days. I was monitered 5-6 x daily for BP or more, and the babies where monitered morning and afternoon, with scans done every 2 days to check growth.
Hope that doesn't scare you, but helps you understand my experience. I wont go into the birth part - but things did get worse once I was induced.

Hey there,
I was induced on the 30th Nov (due the 10th of Dec) for pre eclampsia. Like you, I had only swelling and a high BP. I was admitted the day after my bloods came back for monitoring of both my BP and bubs. My BP continued to rise on that day so the decision was made to induce me the next day as I was so close to my due date. Sometimes they will monitor and put you on meds for it but with me there was no point.
I was so swollen it took about an hour to find somewhere they could put the epidural in but the bonus was I lost about 14 kgs in 3 days and am still losing about 1 kg every 2 days. The only down side was because fo high BP I couldn't push fro that long as it cans end your BP up even higher so after 1/2 hour of pushing had to have a vontouse and it also means you can't have a particularly active labour as you are constantly on a BP machne.
I was only in hosp for 3days after birth and 1 night before.
Feel free to PM me.

Yep i've had it both times. First time it was bad that I was hospitalised for 2 weeks before they could induce me. I was never put on meds for my bp just kept in hospital. Once I had Andrew everything went back to normal with in a few hours. My highest bp with Andrew was 168/108
With Josh I developed it at about 35 weeks. I was in hospital for 3 days (I discharged as I wasn't going to be induced) and left with BP meds (which I never took) I spent the next few weeks resting and this time I listened and stayed on the sofa all day long. However at 38 weeks my bp went totally out of control and my cervix was ready and I was induced 2 days later. And once again as soon as I had Josh everything went back to normal. Highest BP I had with Josh was 170/106.
It's your Uric Acid levels that they will be looking at. If they are high be prepared to go into hospital for 24 urine collection, or input vs output. You have to measure how much you drink and then how much you pee.
If you have any questions just PM me I am happy to answer any questions.

I have oedema (the swelling) - m/w said check out that your puffiness doesn't indent (and stay indented) - mine does so have to go to hospital to get checked out. My BP is usually 110/60 and was at 130/90 at the last visit, but because of CWH being so busy they haven't even bothered to give me an appt that was supposed to happen no later than today.
I don't have any protein in my urine or anything like that, but I do have blurred vision etc. Guess it all depends on how important they think your issues are?
M/w thinks they'll probably induce me next week (after Xmas) to stop everything getting worse, but then again I will be 39 weeks so it won't matter either way.

When did you have them done? You can call the results line after a day. I got the results sent to me the next day which was great. I would assume they would have put them through as urgent which means the results would be available ASAP.

Heya. I went to the hospital late last week for the same deal. My puffiness in my feet is massive, if you wanna see how bad it is, check out the numb toes thread I made just over a week ago, so nasty. My blood pressure wasn't too high, like 138 / 88, but creeping slowly. So I got sent to the hospital on an urgent referal straight away that day. I went, spent 3 hours there, being monitored, peeing (looking for high levels of protein), checking bloods etc. I got my results back and my uric acid wasn't too high. I have always pretty much had protein +1 throughout my pregnancy.
I saw midwife yesterday and she refered me to medlab for more bloods and a urine test. Just waiting on results. My next midwife appointment is Christmas Eve, but have a feeling I will be seeing my midwife sooner than expected.

Great news - bloods came back all clear . I feel pretty silly for getting so worried, but I'm so glad it's all good.
Emz and Ladyluck, hope it stays away for you two.

Good news for both of you!
Was going to say, I had just the high BP, no swelling or protien, and they still admitted me to hospital for a week and induced me two weeks early with DD. So I guess it does vary with the different hospitals. Highest my BP went was 185/110, so pretty high! I think in the end they called it pregnancy induced hypertension, as I had no other pre-eclampsia signs. Here's hoping all of your BP stays down this pregnancy! I've got my fingers crossed for this one too.
By the way, my mw told me that second pregnancies with the same father are less likely to cause high BP, so there is hope!

haha! The DH/DP has a better idea of how to keep us happy during pregnancy by then
I'm off to get a blood test today for this also. My BP normally sits between 110-120 / 70 and On tues at the hospital it was 136/60 and yesterday at the midwife it was 138/80. Plus there was a trace of protein in my urine on Tuesday also.
Having said all that , we've had a completely hectic 2 weeks so I'm putting the BP increase down to that.
The storm has mostly passed now so I'm planning a very relaxing weekend.
Does anyone know if Preeclapmsia is hereditary? Mum had it when she was pregnant with twins, not for any of her singleton pregnancies though.

Funny how we were talking about this the other day. Saw midwife today, my BP is 140/98 and I have Protein ++ (almost +++). I have had mod feet swelling and puffiness for a while. Did bloods and wee tests again today, dropped them into MedLab and awaiting results today. May need to be either monitored overnight or induced. Just playing the waiting game now.

Good Luck Tara. I'm pretty sure that because you are now 40 weeks they will induce you and Phoenix will be here soon.

my midwife today said i have fine bp but then wrote down 140/90 so i think she wrote it wrong(or i cant read the writing ) as she said if i got to 140/90 she'd want to monitor me..slight swelling...no protein etc though..had to have blood test for itching today(even though they were covered in my other blood test two weeks ago) and swabs again to check for ureaplasmic cells (which are fine normally but can cause preterm labour with pregnancy) and I've had two lots of antibiotcis for them already .so lucky me..joys of pregnancy eh... good luck ladyluck!!:)glad all ok arohanui!
