Topic: Money & Budgeting Posted: 02 October 2008 at 3:54pm |
Anyone have some fabulous tips for staying motivated with $$ management?
I'm terrible. I seem to have spent a little here and a little there and now we have almost nothing left in the lead up to Christmas. I have nothing to show for it other than a full wardrobe!
It's nuts as we have a good household income and yet have nothing to show for it.
I'm really over frittering my money away and want to stay on track...more to the point HAVE to stay on track.
Any good tips?

Okay you have a spreadsheet software on your computer like excell or openoffice?
Sit down and put down all normal expenses in a month.
For example: Rent/Bond , Food, Petrol, internet, mobile, power, water ect.
Then also include stuff that only get paid now and then like WOF and car licenses ect.
Do that for every month. (have three columns for every month).
So in teh second column put down what it normally cost you.
In the third one you update it as stuff comes off your account or you pay for it.
so you can see what you budgeted and what you actually paid.
Now put down an amount you want to go in savings each month.
When salary comes in move this immediately to another account which gets higher interest and you tell yourself you wont touch at all. (before any bills even get paid)
Dont forget to put some spending money in here for you and your partner and do this with him. (if finances are joined off course)
If you have trouble with controlling it then I will suggest draw cash for yourself for spending and when it is finished that is done and say not until next month.

Same this side but it really is working for us now. Second month in the row and although we bought stuff for the house we still put stuff into savings.
Maybe different bank accounts? Transfer cash there and give the card to your partner?

We have lots of different accounts for everything, me and DH have our own seperate accounts which we have an allowance that goes into that each pay and thats all we are allowed to spend, all the bills come out of another account, one for savings and one for christmas. All get something put into it each pay.

LOL - I should lend my husband out. I'm hopeless with money, but he's got it all set up. We have a strict budget (that actually has a reasonable amount of spending money in it) and I stick to that (usually) - has worked well for us.
All our bills are on AP, we get spending money each, we have $100 a week for extra things (e.g. WOF, holiday).
Having the different bank accounts can help put money away, esp if there is a penalty for withdrawing money.

Already do those things :( I keep giving the westpac card to DH but then end up with it back in my wallet. We are supposed to just live off our ASB which has grocery $ and an allowance in it.
I guess I just have to harden up and get some will power!

Make a star chart for yourself - if you stick to your budget you can buy a wee present . That's what I need to do with exercise!

Give yourself an allowance and stick to it
Stay away from the shops altogether- there are far too many temptations once you are there
Put the junkmail straight in the recycling without even opening it
Do the same with emails if you currently subscribe to any (Foodtown etc)
Find some interests that don't cost or are cheap to keep yourself busy so you don't end up at the shops
If you are meeting friends for coffee make it somewhere like Mt Eden or Ponsonby Rd rather than a mall
Think about your finances like a work task and set SMART objectives (be specific, make it measurable, identify the actions to take). For example, you may decide to save $500 by mid November for a weekend away by eliminating clothes shopping, making your own lunches. This will be easier to stick to than just trying to save.
Give yourself a few treats (within your allowance of course).

Why don't you go and see a financial advisor (not a budget advisor)? They can look at your incomings and outgoings and work out what your financial goals are, make investment recommendations etc. Ours did a lovely report for us and he didn't charge us anything for it.

Jaz your advice about SMART is exactly what I was going to suggest.
We get paid fortnightly and I look after all our affairs. I write a budget every fortnight and it consists of the following:
BTW figures are examples not my actual budget or amounts
Rent [2 weeks] - $500
Car Payment - $200
Credit card 1 - $200
Credit Card 2 - $200
Savings - $400 (Saving amount only ever changes if an emergency arrises and we have to use part of the normal amount)
Health Ins - $150 (once a Month)
Phone - $100 (Once a Month)
Power - $300 (3 Monthly)
Spending for the fortnight - $600 (including groceries, shopping, lay-by's, coffee, movies etc)
This may not help but I love writing my budget and seeing where our money is going. Once we have used our allocated spending money, thats it, no more. I move money between 4 accounts.
1 - Savings acc where wages go and where all AP's and HP's go from
2 - Cheq acc for weekly/fortnightly spending only
3 - Another savings acc to hold funds for future payments or bills
4 - High earning Savings acc for savings only.
If you are having trouble I'd go and see a financial advisor so they can look into your finances and give you more selective advice

It sounds to me like you have the tools and skills to make a budget, but what you are lacking is the motivation to follow one. So I agree with Jaz - maybe you need to be saving for *something* rather than just saving.
My current targets are $20k to reduce the mortage principle when it expires (still got a way to go yet!) and $3k for a holiday in Aussie next year. Plus I know that every extra dollar we save is more time for me to stay home with bubs when we finally get around to having one! So I like to have money in a separate savings account, and watching it go up and up, knowing what I'm going to use it for.
But thats what works for me. You need to find out what motivates you, and use that for yourself.
Good luck

Also, when I am looking at buying something *frivolous* I always think to myself - that money could be put towards our mortgage (or whatever it is you are aiming for) rather than "oh, its only $20". Because if I think, oh its only $x, then I usually buy it, whereas if I look at it in terms of what else I could use the money for, I usually don't buy it.
But again, thats just me! But maybe there is something in there that works for you.

With the motivation is there something in particular you want to save for? like a holiday? cos then you could get brochures of where you want to go and cut out a pic and stick it on your credit card, might help you put the card back in the wallet. Also I found money mans idea of drawing the money out to spend rather than doing everything on eftpos helped me. Is amazing how much you don't want to spend it when its real and sitting in your wallet, is far to easy to just swipe that card though as it almost seems like pretend money.

Yeah, I definately habe the skills and knowledge to make a good workable budget...just the willpower that is lacking!
Righto. Will toughen up. I will also withdraw each week and stick to using cash...I'm just scared I'll lose my wallet!

Something we do is, for any purchase over $20 we have to sleep on it, unless it's an expense we have planned. That rule has saved me from a lot of frivolous shopping in the past!
