Topic: Keeping 1yo occupied during nappy change Posted: 05 November 2008 at 10:35am |
Ruby is one next week and I am having major issues when Daddy isn't here to distract her during nappy change (and sometimes that doesn't work either!). Much screaming, wriggling, trying to sit up and tears. Not too bad when there is only pee but trying to wipe up poo is a mission!
Any tips on getting her occupied during nappy change so she stays still (and preferably lying down)? I read once that pegging pegs on their top sometimes works, will try that, any other advice?
TIA!

Hey Porcelina - I think lots of us are facing this challenge!! I still strap Oli to the change table, but he wriggles something chronic, and turns himself over and tries to kamakaze off the side of the change table!! I have a selection of empty bottles and containers (old moisturisers / talc etc) that I give him to play with, I try to give him something different each time...some days that works. He seems to particularly like playing with formula scoops and shoes whilst having a bum change, so keep them handy too. It tends to be a lot easier when DH is home as he can hold him down, but most of the time its a struggle!!! I know another one of the Oct mummies gives her little one those little cardboard books to read. Could be worth a try!

Nothing works for Daniel sometimes. i just pin him down with my feet on his shoulders and get it done as quick as possible. Screams like mad but it's just a protest.
My cell phone sometimes works for a distraction

I sing nursery rhymes, in particular "Baa, baa black sheep" and that seems to distract Bella long enough. In fact, she started to say "baa, baa" when I start singing, so she is learning at the same time!

Something that they not noramlly allowed to have works wonders - a cell phone, keys, wallet etc.
Also putting a sticker on Islas clothes or hand, or giving her a sheet of stickers to try pull them off and stick on herself worked well.
When she was a bit olderm getting her involver in getting the nappy, wipes, pulling the wipes out to help mummy worked too.

Thankfully they do grow out of this phase. I found giving my first a disposable nappy to hold of his own was enough to distract him when I changed him. It does get so much easier soon.

Cooper is going thru this at the moment something chronic... never used to be like this either... he kicks out really hard...
I've tried the stickers, phone, nappy wipes, another nappy, now I do the same as Stacey, it's the only way to get it done.
Oh and sometimes I can get him changed if he's standing up against the couch....

we have some little wooden soldiers that sit on a shelf above the change table. Jack is only allowed them when we change his nappy and then after we put them back and wave goodbye until the next nappy change. That works about 95% of the time. Otherwise he often likes holding the nappy cream jar. Oh and we have a mobile beside it which worked when he was younger

Pegs workded for a bit for Amy and also being given something she is not normally allowed.
The best thing I found was to give Amy one of those books that have sounds/songs. We have 2 - a Peter Rabbit one that has 5 nursery rhymes and song book with sound effect buttons (cow, sheep, phone, clock etc). Amy would either press the song and I would sing along or with the other book I would ask her to press the moo, or say where is the phone. Still works now in times of desperation (and particularly foul nappies )

Haha!!! I've been changing her on the floor where all her toys are and grabbing them but for the most part she gets on all fours which I don't mind, can still change it (it's sitting up that's a pain). Thanks for all the tips, hopefully this can help out other people too!
P.S. Just LOVE the Elmo icon!

We're going through this as well so I totally relate.
I just wanted to add - 1year! - I remember stalking your thread when you were just in labour and it only seems like yesterday.
